Wasps team to face Sale Sharks

Director of Rugby Dai Young has named his squad to take on Sale Sharks in round nine of the Aviva Premiership, at the Ricoh Arena this Sunday, kick off 2.30pm.

In the pack, Marty Moore starts in the front row, where he’ll pack down alongside Tommy Taylor, who returns from England camp, and captain Matt Mullan.

The second row partnership of Matt Symons and Kearnan Myall remains unchanged, while in the back row both Ashley Johnson and Alex Rieder start, linking up with Thomas Young on the openside flank.

The backline sees two changes, with Joe Simpson starting in the nine shirt, alongside Danny Cipriani who is set to make his 150thPremiership appearance, and Frank Halai who starts on the left wing.

Ahead of Sunday’s game at the Ricoh Arena, Dai Young said: “Last Saturday was a kick in the backside, which hopefully the boys will react to. We’re an honest group and we know we will have to play much better against Sale Sharks this weekend, but I’m confident we can. The good thing about the Premiership is you have the opportunity to get back on the horse and put it right the following week.

“We know what Sale will bring and we’ve already seen first-hand how tough a side they are to beat, when they edged us 17-13 at the AJ Bell in the Anglo-Welsh Cup recently. They have a very solid set piece and a very strong driving game. We expect a big challenge from them up front and we know how physical a team they are.

“We’re back at home, where we have a record we’re proud of and want to defend, but this Sunday will be a real test for us. It’s a massive couple of weeks for us in the Aviva Premiership.”

Tickets are available from £15, while under 10s go. To buy your tickets now, simply log on to our ticketing page, visit us at the Ricoh Arena Ticket Office, call us direct on 02476786411, or click here

Still not a fan of the midfield, glad to see Halai in many ways. I'm going to assume we have Reider to act as 8 on the scrum, but 6 in terms of rucks. Johnson for some carrying. Glad to see Willis get a shot, and hope we give him some time.

That's a handy looking Sale side, hope we can improve on last week's showing.

Strange Sale bench, no 10 or second row.

They've preferred James to Mugford at 10 previously this season, and Beaumont to lock isn't new for them this season either.

I expected Reider but losing Guy is a blow.

We know Taylor can play 8-, and it always means Ash can come off at 50 minutes and then come back on.

Plan is simple this week - play better than last week!

Too many square pegs in round holes for my liking. While I like Johnson back at 6, covering hooker from there is not ideal. Most teams will put on an entirely fresh front row around 60 minster. Which ever of our 2 hookers is playing in the final minutes, they will have played a full game and be up against a fresh opponent (even if it is only Rob Webber!!??). Gaskell covering 6/8 is OK, but it's not been his primary position since joining us. Eastmond better suited to 12 than 13. Howe and Willis may be called into action from the bench having played for Coventry 24 hrs earlier. As the "parent" club, presumably Dai can have them stood down from Cov duties?

Not so long ago we had an embarrassment of riches in the back row. Now we have a hooker and a lock in the 23 as back rows (admittedly both good and experienced in their "second" position) along with an academy lad with no premiership experience. Like a throw back to 3 or 4 years ago. Rotten run of luck with back row injuries.
