All Together Again at the London Double Header
By Griff
June 23 2009
The London Double Header will be played on Saturday September 5th 2009, it's the now-traditional start of the season for the four "London" clubs. If you think the MadStad can be an empty, soulless, concrete monstrosity you should see Twickenham on a double-header day with four teams' supporters and a load of cheap-ticket-buying extras in.
To counter this here at The Craic we try and get as many London Irish supporters sitting together as possible. We may only be a quarter of the crowd but we aim to be at least half the noise and by grouping together we try to maximise our cheering potential - or at the very least get a reasonable chorus of the Fields going.

London Irish will be playing... rugby. Presumably against an opponent. The best guess is that this is our away game against Saracens but that's not yet confirmed. Last year Harlequins withdrew from the scheme as a profit-sharing partner - they consider their home-game to be more valuable (ironic given their crowd are the least inconvenienced) - and consequently the sequence of playing has become a bit difficult to guess. The wisdom is that we're due an away game and we played Wasps last time, since Quins won't play "home" that leaves Saracens.

The All-Together scheme is very simple. I collect the forms and cheques from everyone and send them in as a batch to Irish who send me the tickets which I then distribute to their rightful owners. It's worked reasonably well in the past.

This season we have some changes or at least uncertainties but I think it'll work out fine - we have to be quick, though.

There are two prices of ticket available on the form £40 and £30 and, where last year they were allocated between expensive and cheap season-tickets, this year they're first-come first-served.

Also, as it is probably an away game there is a little doubt as to whether we will have the drummers. I'm going to run the scheme as if we have got drummers - it only gets simpler if we're not taking them so I can sort that out later.

The scheme is open to all - season ticket holders and non-STH. To join in :-

If you are a season ticket holder:
You should have received your form from the club (please contact them if you haven't).
Fill the form in as if you were sending it to Irish.
If you're purchasing extra tickets for friends and family then please fill them in too and either complete the credit-card portion of the form or send a cheque (made out to "London Irish" exactly as it says on the form).
Instead of sending the form to Sunbury send it to me at:

Graeme Griffiths,
42, Redgrave Place,
Marlow,
Bucks
SL7 1JZ

Please enclose a separate piece of paper with your name, contact phone number and address and how many forms you've sent (and for what value) plus how many other tickets you're buying.
Please also enclose a SAE big enough for tickets so I can get your tickets to you.
Can you also mark the paper with whether you want to sit WITH or AWAY FROM the drummers. If we're not taking the drums I'll simply ignore this but please tell me anyway.
Please note - if we take the drums they will be allocated from a £30 section. If you want to be with the drums apply for £30 tickets.

If you're not a season ticket holder:

Simply send the piece of paper requesting a number of tickets (with value and Drummer-preference) with your name, phone and address along with an SAE and your cheque (made payable to "London Irish").

NOTE: As we're in a group everyone gets a 20% discount on the extra tickets this means £40 tickets cost £32 and £30 tickets cost £24. This applies to both STH and non-STH.

As the tickets are being sold first-come first served I need to do this quickly. Pleas make sure I have your form by Friday 3rd July. I will be sending the forms in Monday 6th July.

If there are many who cannot get the form to me in these two weeks I may run a second batch later but I'd like to get it all done in one-hit.

I understand we are playing away to Saracens this year. I will send you the bits and bobs this week. It is fair to assume that many people will be away on holiday this time of the year, so a second batch would be desireable. Many thanks for doing this again for us, Griff.

For single people out there, please estate on your form "SINGLE" and Griff will make sure you are seated next to a sexy looking person of the opposite sex, if that is your preference. Sorry Maggie, can't make Friday - it'll have to be the post. Unless the touch league starts again next Wednesday in which case I'll be at Readingensians then.

Thanks Paul.

O.K. Let's make that a fixture then.

Readingensians RFC Wednesday 1st July

Bring your forms and stuff along and you get the "bonus" of seeing the Flatulent Faries Touch Rugby Team begin their Summer campaign. We may always lose but we're also last out of the bar. We are usually on last - 1950 (or 2000) k.o. - but I'll update you if we're on a earlier one.

Of course it is the first fixture of the Summer league and traditionally it will be rained-off...

doh, I can't be there 1st July, will put form in the post to you. Please keep up the losing tradition while I'm away, though, I heard a vicious rumour the touch fairies won a game! Scandalous.

Can't work out the form though - do I mark that I want a £40 or a £30 ticket (we'll be with the usual suspects)? Are we in the £40 section?

Griff

would it not be easier for you to just get a group of £30.00 S.T. holders and frends together in the East Stand - as I presume the £40 tickets are westies........?

No Marie - according to JesterJane it doesn't matter where we sit. She wrote on the other thread:

I was confused when I read the form so I phoned LI. Apparently it is personal choice as to whether you want to sit in £40 or £30 section - you can choose either, regardless of where your ST is actually situated.

Eh ? I haven't any idea whether the tickets are in the East or the West - Anna has told me they're "spread throughout the Stadium in the lower and middle tiers of the East and West stands".

I think it's reasonable to assume that the £40 tickets will be closer to half-way than the £30 ones but that's about it. Which tickets you go for is your choice - not dictated by which type of ST you have (or even if you have one or not). If you want a £40 ticket, though, it's a good idea to get in quick.

The blocks will be allocated wherever, harlequin fashion (sorry about that). As ever, there will be a void of noise and atmosphere in any particular block, depending on who is playing. HQ is a big place, you know.

My application will be in the post. Cheers, Griffthumbs down

Addendum:

Just checked with the club - the drummers will be in a similar position to last year (if we take them) in M31 - this is a £30 section. If you want to join the drums please apply for £30 tickets.

I suppose it's feasible to hold the £30 applications for a little while so as to maximise the number of people we can get together. What do folks think ? We need the drummers to shout-up now (I'll email y'all soon) but we can reserve their seats. I would imagine everyone would prefer to allocate the seats around the drums to people who aren't likely to complain so I would have thought I could ask Anna to hold that block a bit longer.

Griff
Can you help me out here please
Who will we be playing ?
Will it be a " home " or " away " game for us ?
Will Quins be involved ?
Griff, Mark Evans and Quins, claim that they lose revenue by playing the Double Header.
If Quins are not involved the whole concept will be in jeopardy.
Quins are concentrating on their ' Big Game ' fixture at HQ in December
They had over 50,000 for the fixture last season
Any info will be gratefully received
God Bless

Quins opted out as money partners so they don't give-up a home game. So basically, they'll always play an away fixture against one of the three remaining teams. ME reckons they make more money from home fixtures than they can from the LDH. For them this is possibly true. Since Irish, Saracens and Wasps all rent their usual grounds the switch of venue actually saves them money - Quins still have the upkeep on the Stoop to pay so effectively it costs them more to join the LDH. They also get the revenue from concessions at the Stoop so it's possible that 13K at the Stoop nets them more cash than a quarter of 50K at HQ (with more expensive tickets). I know how much Pat Coyne told me it was worth to us when he first mooted it and we'd have to seriously fill the MadStad to make it - for us (and I suspect the other two) it's a no-brainer.

Quins Big Game is a bit weird. If they don't make money from a quarter of a 50,000 at £40 a ticket I don't see how they suddenly make money from 50K £10 tickets. Perhaps they get a better rental deal on the stadium or concession percentage - I guess only ME knows. Maybe they'll ratchet the ticket price up this year and last year was a loss-leader.

It'll be interesting to see who they "draw" at Christmas - I can't see the fixture being very "big" if they get Leeds, Newcastle or Sale...

Griff
Interesting about Quins
They used the " Big Game " as a marketing tool - it appears to have worked
With over 2 months to go to the start of the season they have sold over 6,000 season ticktes
I note with interest that they play Wasps , as an away game ,in the Double Header in September
And on the 27th December in their " Big Game 2 " - you've guessed it - they play Wasps again at Twickenham !
Mark Evans must be laughing at the RFU and all the way to the bank
God Bless

Nice one Austin.

Last chance ladies and gentlemen!

I'll be at Readingensians RFC this evening playing touch-rugby (in the loosest sense of the word) if you fancy dropping your forms off there. (On the A4 at the Woodley/Sonning roundabout).

If you're running late the deadline is actually Saturday's post - might even stretch as far as Monday's depending on my work-load.

I've got a fair few but there's plenty of room for more - don't forget you don't have to be a STH to join in just send a cheque and your details and you too can have the discount.

O.K. Chaps,

I have bad news... Currently I do not have the tickets, I know Anna was sorting them out and they should be on their way but the calendar isn't helping. I had hoped to see them Thursday or Friday but they didn't get here. I'm fairly sure the post has gone today - I haven't had any other post but I think it comes around 1030 normally.

This means, with the Bank Holiday on Monday they can't be here earlier than Tuesday, so I won't see them until Tuesday night. Even if that's the case I can't get them in the post before Wednesday, and I think that's cutting it a bit fine.

So I propose to distribute the tickets at HQ on the day, I think that's the sensible option given that I'm going to have to hassle LI on Tuesday to ensure we get them at all. I'll post here next week with the details (once I've worked them out).

Sorry for the hassle, when Anna was sorting these a couple of weeks ago I expected to see the tickets earlier than the week of the game. To say I'm disappointed is an understatement.

I will get your tickets to you, don't worry.

Collection Details

I will be distributing tickets from waltham's coach in the north car-park. It is a little distance from the Guinness Village but at least it means it should be easy to find. The coach should be there from 12:30 and I'm aiming to be there before it arrives. It is a Horseman's coach which are usually white with the Horseman logo on them.

http://www.horsemancoaches.co.uk/images/Horseman_head.jpg

Waltham is hoping to remember to pack a LI flag to fly close to it but as they're arriving early they'll be quite close to the coach entrance at the back of the North Car Park.

I will stay in place until I have got rid of all the tickets or 1415 (when I'll leg-it to my seat).

If you are expecting tickets from me please contact me now!!!. Either by email to griff(at)londonirish(dot)org, or by PM, and tell me your real name so I can match it to your booking. I'll respond later with my mobile number in case of emergencies (if you could supply one too that will be with you on Saturday that would be handy).

If I haven't heard from you by Friday evening I will have to ring you and my mood on Saturday will be governed by the number of people who answer that call with "oh, yeah, I saw the details..."

Please tell as many people who you know are in the booking to look at this message and then tell me (or I'm in for a dull Friday evening).

Many, many thanks to Ian and Katie for the help in allowing us to crash their coach parking. Thanks guys.

As to the question of whether I have your details or not best contact me with your name and I'll let you know if I'm expecting it.

Thank you for your understanding, and sorry it all went a bit Pete Tong.

I still think they should be dleivered straight to us, I blame LISC personally and for ten English pounds a year I expect the coach to be nearer to the stadium than the North car park, I mean we could practically call in on Russ it's that far away winking smiley

Wow! Well done chaps, just had a check through and I've heard from everyone! Makes this a lot easier knowing you're all abreast of the situation.

See y'all tomorrow!

I've not had an e-mail yet sad smiley

Should be 3 season tickets and an extra 1 for the McCauliffe clan?

I sent an e-mail this morning..... so does that mean there is a problem with our tickets?

Had to book my seats late (for a number of reasons) and therefore couldn't join the LISC family as I'd originally planned.

Therefore:

Crap seats
Crap rugby
Crap day

Roll on Sunday!
