TFTM 2014 -1 : Chris Hala'ufia

By Big-Al
July 7 2014

A new batch of pictoral farewells from Big-Al kicks off with an absolute legend. Thanks for the Memories Mr Chris Hala'ufia!

After 6 seasons with London Irish, Chris is heading west to play for The Scarlets next season. Off the pitch, Chris is one of the nicest people you could ever wish to meet, but on the pitch, I doubt many of us would want to be up against him. Over his 6 years with us, Chris made 112 appearances, scoring 19 tries – Chris also has 20 caps for Tonga.
With the ball in hand Chris was guaranteed to break the gain line and without the ball he was a ferocious tackler, sometimes a little too ferocious which lead to a poor disciplinary record (some of which was deserved, and some not).
Thanks Chris and good luck at The Scarlets.

His disciplinary record wasn't poor, it was a disgrace. He is not the first and will not be the last South Sea islander to blur the lines of a tackle into an assault but Mr Hala'ufia turned it into his speciality. Again, as with most SS islanders I am sure he was delightful off the pitch but as someone who has not viewed the last 6 years through LI tinted spectacles I am happy to see his exit from the AP permanently rather than serving yet another suspension. He was obviously unaware of the phrase - a game for hooligans played by gentlemen.

Typical view expressed by a fan of another club. Chris played 112 games for Irish. He probably committed 3 really bad offences in that time. The rest were minor indiscretions, many of which were later overturned or reduced. Unfortunately he developed a reputation which he found hard to shake off, but his discipline has been far better in recent seasons. I hope you show similar disdain towards Callum Clark when he leaves Northampton/retires - a player far dirtier than Chris and someone who has successfully broken the arm of opponents.

Anyway, farewell to Chris. Arguably our most important player over the past six seasons. He was always one of our best players when on the pitch and gave us go forward in a way which no other forward could. Post Steff and Maps, he was in fact the only player full-stop who regularly got us over the gain line. He played all 24 league matches in the year that we got to the final and I always though it ridiculous that he didn't receive more accolades for his performances that season from the press. Hopefully Treviranus and Leo can step up as the main ball carriers in our pack and Guest and Narraway will provide solid options from the base of the scrum. I for one will miss Hala'Ufia immensely - arguably my favourite player over the past few years. I am sure he will thrive at the Scarlets.

Yes the points above are ludicrous but Mr H did attract too much attention and did give away penalties that he didn't need to. Agree with all the LI points above, real go forward and power when we were lacking it elsewhere and has been great for us. Good luck at Scarlets just don't play against us
