Try, try, try again!

The Hartpury game will be remembered for 2 main reasons: some outstanding tries especially from our backs and a sickening injury to possibly our best player this year, Tom Stephenson. Whilst most of us expected a straightforward game and convincing win, it did not start that way.

An early penalty to Hartpury kicked deep. Their hooker is driven over and the conversion is good. 0 – 7 to Hartpury.

Irish needed to respond quickly and they did, Loader scoring again. From then we were on top, though proceedings were then halted for quite some time due to the injury to Tom, since been revealed to be a broken leg. We wish Tom well in his recovery.

When play resumed the forwards took over, quickfire tries from Ioane, big Trev, McNally and Albert. I read one report from Hartpury, where they describe Albert as a blind-side giant. Good to see Trev back on as he had an earlier injury and had to pass a HIA.

Half-time arrived and we go in 33 – 7 ahead. I have since read on the forum, that one of our regulars (HMRH) went for a quick beer and that was when we scored 2 quick tries. Maybe HMRH has found his calling!

Second half continued in the same vein, though this time the backs took over. 4 more tries arrived, 2 for Veitokani and 2 for Williams. Veitokani’s first try was a beautiful display of running rugby and hinted at what is to come next year now that he is settling in. Also, good to see Williams back after injury.

At one point, we were down to 13 men but still scored a try during this period! You have to give it to the Hartpury team; they were getting hammered back at every opportunity but still came up with a try in the second-half from their No.8.

Final Score 57 – 12. This means we head to Richmond knowing a win will seal promotion.

Come on you Irish. Get well soon Tom.
