Phil was bought in to provide back up for the God-like being that is Lord Christopher Algernon Cholmondley Farquhar ‘Loverat’ O’Sheasby. No feat for an ordinary mortal, lucky then that Spud is anything but ordinary. Initial scepticism turned to healthy respect after seeing the man-machine power down the pitch with two or three opposition players hanging off him, always a heart-warming sight. A few fitness concerns arose last season but a summer spent in the loving arms of the coaching staff have seen to that and it’s a leaner, fitter and actually quite splendid looking Spud who returns for service this season.
