Topsy made me Tipsy

Tri-Try Master
By Gnoo
January 23 2006
Not one, not two but three top tries from Topsy Ojo had the crowd going wild yesterday at the Madjeski. For such a shy boy he certainly does put himself in the limelight.

London Irish 75 – 12 Section Paloise

The day started as it appeared to continue in good spirits having a jar down The Three Guineas, celebrating Big Andys birthday.

Big Andy and the boys on the lash in the Three Guinneas

We found our seats and were pleased to have the opportunity to sit next a Madejski virgin - Natalie from Sheffield. Her only other game was watching London Irish v Saracens a few weeks ago and after the excitement there who wouldn’t want more.

My first notes were that the lads come out Bob is bounding and Topsy is raring to go – little did I know at that point in time just how much! My intention is to keep this report as short as possible so I am only going to comment on the tries.

1st Minute

Pau overthrow in the line-out, Irish collect. The ball is passed out wide as Irish charge up the field. Topsy gets the pass and goes over for the try only to be brought back by the touch judge for having his little toe in touch.

5th Minute

Pau play chicken on their own try line. There is a scramble for the ball, Dodge nicks it and grounds the ball under the posts.

Flutey converts

7-0 – The Ginger Liquor is flowing.

10th Minute

After two penalties, Irish making many metres. The play is between the halfway line and the 22. Pau try to disrupt Irish ball by slowing it down. Irish get the ball back and Mike Catt gets the ball and goes over the try line – he makes it look sooooo easy.

Flutey converts

14-0 – Another swig, it warms up the bones.

18th Minute

Irish on the attack the passes are flowing and to hand, Michael and his magic feet takes the ball under the posts. Flutey converts. What’s this, the West Stand are chanting and singing louder than the East!

21-0 – Here we go again – purely medicinal purposes you understand, Oh dear will I be sober enough to finish this report?

28th Minute

Pau kick to touch but miss, Irish collect and a cheeky chip kick is made to the corner. Delon chases, judging the ball well he picks it up and grounds it over the try line.

A more difficult kick for Flutey this time but it is no problem for him. The sound of that boot to ball was sublime!

28-0 - Hiccup!

I am very pleased we have the four tries and the bonus point but I am feeling quite sorry for Pau – may’be that’s the drink talking. A point a minute at the moment.

31st Minute

All I can say is what the hell happened there! One minute nothing, the next minute Topsy is steaming up the field, avoiding the Pau defence. Topsy is under the posts.

Flutey converts – it’s an easy one.

35-0

33rd Minute

Pau receive a Yellow Card for slowing the ball down

36th Minute

Scrum to London Irish – they pass it out wide to the wing, Topsy runs over the try line in the corner but continues to put it under the posts. STOP IT TOPSY YOU’RE MAKING ME TIPSY!

Flutey converts

42-0

Pau must feel poo.

38th Minute

Fast running rugby, with lots of passes on the wing. Roche goes over for a try. He makes it look easy – surely this is what we should have done against Parma?

Flutey converts

49-0

42nd Minute

Irish clear from just outside their 22. Pau chase but so does Topsy. A Pau player fumbles the ball and Topsy collects and over he goes again. Topsy scores his hat-trick as the crowd chant TOPSY TOPSY TOPSY!

Flutey converts

56-0

Half Time

46th Minute

Pau change three of their big boys as they are cheered energetically by the Irish crowd.

47th Minute

Irish scrum in the Pau 22, the ball is passed out wide. Flutey breaks through and is under the posts

Nils Mordt converts

63-0

52nd Minute

Pau Player Cabannes is sin binned for a clothes line type thing on Armitage. Delon is down for quite a while. Was nice to see Cabannes checking that Delon was ok before leaving the pitch.

56th Minute

London Irish attack, again it is passed wide. Flavin goes over in the corner, wonderful!

Nils misses the kick, Flav could have got it a bit closer!

68-0

68th Minute

Pau are on the attack. The ball only goes through a couple of hands when Darbo for Pau crosses the try line.

Converted by Beauxis

68-7

76th Minute

Pau chip kick to the corner and Souverbie collects going over in the corner for a try it looks like it will be a difficult conversion.

Conversion missed.

68-12

Come on boys I want to finish on a high

84th Minute

Pau have the ball but Roche intercepts and steams up field. He passes to Delon who finishes off a great move by the big man. Pau look dejected.

Nils converts

75-12 and its all over.

I will finish my report with an official quote from the man of the moment Topsy Ojo. When asked his view on the game today he said:

“It is very good to get a result like this after last week. It was great to put it right. I am very happy that we now have a home quarter final and I am looking forward to playing Gloucester next week”.
