Kenya Harlequins Update 9/7/2007
By Herbert Mwachiro
July 9 2007
Quins 1st XV bounce back with a 42-19 victory over Nakuru to reclaim top spot in league. Quins 2ndXV thrash Impala 29-0 (total aggregate 61-37) to reach their second successive ESS Final. Kenya pip Cameroon 22-19 to qualify for the Africa Cup semis as Quins players lead the way.
Quins patched up a side affected by absence of players on injury list, exams, personal commitments and national duty that rose to the occasion and thumped Nakuru RFC 42-19. It was the perfect dose for the side after two disastrous previous games and events that the captain Sidney Ashioya, Coach Tom Odundo, Deputy Coach Edward Kinyany, players, fans, die-hard members and management would hurriedly like to forget. The performance brought smiles in contrast to the gloom of the previous games. Try scorers for Quins were Allan Onyango (2), Patrick Onyango, Jack Masika and David Mogere. Men of the match were Patrick Onyango and David Mogere.

The game also marked the return of Allan Makaka to the first team after a long lay-off from injury. He showed that he had lost none of his pace and will be an asset as the battle for Kenya Cup reaches its crescendo. Sadly back rower Enos Otieno played his last game for the club as he leaves to further his rugby career in the USA. We wish him all the best.

Not to be outdone the seconds reached their second consecutive ESS final after smashing neighbours Impala  29-0 in the second leg semi. The side that lost 37-32 the previous weekend wee in total control as Impala wished the game was a one leg affair. Buoyed by veterans Dan Orawo, Joel Karobiu, Mark Fish, Sidney Blackie Obonyo and Roger Akena, Quins 2nd xv were irresistable. Man of the match was second rower Jared Owino who played his heart out and won every line-out ball on offer.

Next games: 14th July 2007-07

Kenya Cup: Quins vs. Mombasa (home)

ESS Final: Quins 2nd XV vs. Strathmore or KCB

Good luck to both teams.

In the Africa Cup, Harlequins Daniel Kiptoo (Kenya Captain) led Kenya to a tight 22-19 victory over Cameroon. The win saw Kenya qualify for the semis of the Africa Cup where they will take on arch rivals Uganda.
