Harlequin Amateurs: About the Ams
By Stephen Burgess August 13 2007
Harlequin Amateur Rugby Club is entering an exciting new era following a merger between Lockside Rugby Football Club and The Harlequin Amateur Rugby Football Club during this summer. Lockside Rugby Football Club was formed on the 1st of June 2003.

However, the original rugby club, under the name Lensbury Rugby Football Club, was founded in 1920 by staff working for the Shell Oil. At the end of the 1990's the Lensbury Club was less inter woven with Shell and a decision was made to end the provision of field sports under the Lensbury umbrella and the Rugby Club along with Hockey, Football and Cricket, were asked to split from the official Lensbury Club. Lockside RFC was the continuation of Lensbury Rugby Football Club under a new name.

The Harlequin Amateur Rugby Football Club was re-established in 2000 to uphold the founding principles of amateur social rugby that had always been played at The Stoop. They enjoyed several successful seasons and were promoted into Herts/Middlesex Division 1 at the start of the 2005/2006 season having been crowned the previous seasons league Champions of Herts/Middlesex Division 2.

Last season however both Clubs found themselves struggling in terms of fielding enough teams to make a club viable and after several meetings a decision was made to merge, subject to RFU and Middlesex County RFU approval. Approval was received from the relevant authorities this summer and the new Club is looking forward to competing in Herts/Middlesex Division 2 for the 2007/2008 season under the new name of Harlequin Amateur Rugby Club.

The expanded player base that we now have following the merger will enable us to field 3 sides each Saturday plus the occasional Vets. However new Players of all standards are very welcome.

The club boasts a fully qualified Coach, a Physio, a Sports Masseur and an active Committee headed up by our President Bob Hiller, British Lion, England Captain and Harlequins Fullback during the late 60’s and early 70’s.

Our new Club House overlooks the Thames and is based in Ferry Road, just off Broom Road, Teddington. We have pitches on Broom Road, opposite the TV Studios, (very close to where Harlequins used to play in the distant past) and at St. Mary’s College, Waldergrave Road. Please see map on following link for further details:

Out of interest, how does this (if at all) affect the Ams relationship with HFC? Does this mean that your only link is titular, or is everything exactly the same as before but you're at a different venue?

I'll be arriving very late, so not sure I'm gonna get chance to pop over & say hello, but please don't take offense - I reckon I'll be playing catch up over at the HLFC tent.
