Quins Ladies Pre-Season v Blackheath 45-0
By Tanya W September 5 2007
With pre-season training well under way and our new coach Alex putting the team through their paces, it was time to put all the hard work under the test against old league rivals Blackheath. The match was played over four 20 minute periods to allow suitable rest on what was a very nice hot sunny day. There were Quins ladies debuts for Patsy Aston, Isia Storey, Terry and Hannah Clarke.

The first quarter proved very tough. The Ladies started off positively but after a couple of minutes Blackheath broke through. Quins held their own in the scrums and at times looked like the stronger side and at times there were moments where Quins showed the skills they have but just couldn’t sustain it.

Quins came out like a different side in the second quarter. After a pep talk by coach Alex about the skills and moves he had seen in the first quarter, Ellie Saunders almost broke through to score a try.

The 3rd quarter Quins started to slip back into old ways and it was not helped by Blackheath repeatingly frustrating the Ladies and not allowing them to play their game. Injuries and tiredness began to show and Blackheath again started to get the better of Quins.

In the final quarter of the game, the aim was for Quins to keep their heads up, and try to get a score on the board. The backs managed to get a couple of good runs with Kay Rees covering half the pitch only to be tackled at the 22 yard line. Everyone in the team kept their cool really well despite the frustrations that Blackheath were giving the team.

Final score Blackheath 45 Quins 0.

Some people played out of position initially, and with Blackheath having a number more players in their squad to rotate onto the pitch, Quins did very well to match them and at times make Blackheath look average. This was considering Quins had a small quad for the match and had a number of key players missing from the squad. There were a number of positives to be drawn from the match despite the loss.

Back of the match: Karen Cardy, for putting in some brilliant tackles and some good scrum- halfing. Forward of the match: Claire Tirebuck helping one of the new players settle into the scrum, motivating the back row and playing really well.

Next match: Quins vs Wimbledon 09 Sept 07– Away.
