Fortunately Wimbledon is one of those clubs who play to the true spirit of rugby, and lent some players to make up numbers so that a competitive game could be played.
From the kick-off Quins took control of the game, with prop Hannah Clarke taking the ball from behind the posts and dashing up the pitch. The ball-carriers relentlessly probed the Wimbledon defensive line, and were rewarded when a valiant effort from centre, Katy Strudwick, broke through the barricades, offloading to Rhiannon Needham galloping down the wing. Needham eventually went down 10 metres short of the try line, but on her knees managed to pop the ball back to Strudwick, who was faced with only one defender to beat. A spectacular hand off ensued which allowed Strudwick to ground the ball.
Wimbledon used the conversion attempt as a chance to have a quiet word with themselves, and came back a different side. For the next 40 minutes, Quins were firmly on the defensive as Wimbledon made good use of the ruck ball to suck in defenders and create the overlap.
Although the Ladies rallied in the last 20 minutes, the damage had already be done, and even the valiant water-carrying efforts of Tobi or the urging of captain, Jo Everett could not spur the ladies on to a last minute try.
Final score: Wimbledon 40 : Quins Ladies 5.
Harlequin Ladies would like once again to thank those Wimbledon players who donned a Quins jersey for the game - your efforts were outstanding. Next week the ladies face Millwall Venus for their last pre-season friendly.
