Harlequin Amateurs 21 - Old Emanuel 10
By J Lowe September 27 2007
Harlequin Amateurs ground out a win on Saturday to progress in the Junior Vase, however the home side looked in trouble early on. The first 15 minutes saw Old Emanuel in control, scoring an early penalty as the Ams yet again failed to be disciplined in the breakdown.
OE stole Quins' line-out ball and a simple move in the backline allowed a try under the posts. Old Emanuel were ten points up and the Quins were facing an early exit from the Cup.

Slowly, the Ams started to cause problems - getting to the breakdown quicker and driving long mauls upfield. OE also began to lose their discipline and James Loizos was able to convert a simple penalty. The referee started penalising Old Emanuel for persistent off side and hands-in at the breakdown and this allowed Quins to play their game-plan. On 30 minutes, a quick tap penalty from Russell Wigginton caught OE on the hop and allowed captain Jonathan Lowe to drive over and score. 10-8 at half time.

The Ams in action

Second half Harlequins took control of the game - an early penalty from Loizos gave the home side a 1 point advantage. Quins began to challenge the Emanuel defence through strong rucking and continual drives from the pack. Tries beckoned for Phil Ah-Sun and James Loizos as they made line-breaks however OE managed to stop the attacks short of the line in both instances. Eventually though the defence couldn't hold the Ams and Wilhelm Wessels drove over under the posts.

The final minutes saw the Ams convert another penalty, and the referee's final whistle was welcomed by the home supporters. 21 - 10 to Harlequins, who look forward to Tuesday's cup draw.

Well done the Ams,

Is it me, or does the photo show a leg position more commonly favoured by ballerinas?

Looks a bit like the leg position of the Harlequin to me - not an easy way to run but shows good club spirit winking smiley
