Harlequin Amateurs Thrash London Irish Amateurs
By Steve Burgess October 31 2007
London Irish Amateurs 2nd XV 16 - Harlequin Amateurs 1st XV 44. With a week off from league duties, Harlequin Amateurs travelled to Sunbury to face London Irish Amateurs 2s. With their 1s flying three leagues higher, this was expected to be a tough battle for the away side.
After 2 minutes all thoughts of big game were forgotten as Mark Sowden scored his first try for the Quins 1st XV. It couldn't have been more simple for the centre as he crashed through from an attacking scrum and ran unchallenged under the posts. From the kick off, Quins moved back into attack and quickly pegged Irish into their own corner for a defensive line-out. The Quins stole the line-out, drove forward and then again scored under the posts as Danny Beaumont side-stepped around the ruck.

Irish then moved into attack and won penalty after penalty as the Quins strayed offside. Confusion soon reigned as Bruce Uglow was penalised for not releasing and then harshly yellow carded for the away side's consistent offending - Irish took the 3 points. With 14 men the Irish saw opportunities and quickly gained another 3 points for more Quin offences. At 14 - 6, the home side thought they were back in it. Soon however Quins were back on the attack - James Loizos saw an opportunity for a cross-field kick and Nick Marren caught it on the full to score in the corner.

In the second half, Irish were first to score, driving a line out into the corner and over for the 5 points. Immediately Quins scored a drop goal through Loizos. Then the tries started to come thick and fast. Simple hands put Bruce Uglow through for a try, and then Sowden capitalised as the Quin forwards disrupted an Irish scrum on their own line. A second Irish catch and drive try was sandwiched between two Quins tries - Hamish Moffett set up Uglow out wide and Marren broke through in midfield and then beat the Irish full back in a one-on-one.

The final minutes saw interesting refereeing, strangely reversing penalties, not playing advantage and then showing a yellow card to Dave Salomon, as he asked what decision had been made. It didn't change the scoreline however, and the Quins travelled home with a comprehensive 44-16 victory.

Forwards - James Berry, Danny Beaumont, Charlie Allen (Andy Lawrence 60), Jonny Sycamore, Jonathan Lowe (c), David Salomon, Toby Douglas, Wilhelm Wessels (Mark Dingwall 55)
Backs - Graham Coyle (Duncan Simpson 65), James Loizos, Phil Ah-Sun, Mark Sowden, Hamish Moffett, Nick Marren, Bruce Uglow

Tries - Uglow (2), Sowden (2), Marren (2), Beaumont
Conv - Loizos (3)
Drop Goal - Loizos

Harlequin Amateurs 2nd XV lost 0 - 42 against a very strong Chiswick 2nd XV who top the Middlesex Merit Table unbeaten after four wins out of four, whilst the Harlequin Vets got back to winning ways with a 20 - 5 win against Teddington Antlers 3rd XV in a local derby match.
