Players for Next Season
By Artemis
April 11 2008
The following table lets us see who will be in the multi-coloured jerseys next season. The obvious areas for recruitment based on this appear to be a fly half and maybe a winger/utility back.  These will need to be first team calibre players. We may also look to recruit another scrum half if Steve goes, as well as another lock if Spanghero goes and maybe another back row if Chris H leaves,  however these will probably be squad players as their first team places have been snapped up by Robson, Guest, Robshaw.

Finally we are still waiting to hear whether Seb Jewell and James Inglis will be staying, it is understood that most of the Academy boys are staying with the exception of Ryan Manyika who is off to Leeds. I have also included the new academy boys.

Thanks Artemis, it's always nice to have something to sum up all of the changes.

Here's hoping we can add the likes of Vickerman and Evans, sign the rest of the Academy boys and perhaps add a bit more strength in depth around the site

good posting. Shows our total lack at 10. We will also basically lose nick and stretts and possibly danny for huge parts of the season because of the new rfu deal so will need to recruit more overseas to cover them. More english players is a big risk in case they get too good and we lose them to england! We need more kolpak players to cut our risk.

Although do we now get paid more for English qualified players?

Great summary
1. 2009 - a lot of important players out of contract
2. No 10 ???? - we really do need a top top No 10 to get the best out of the team and ensure that the 2009 contrats want to stay
3. We do need more quality ex internationals/Colpac who can cover our injuries and call ups

on on quins

so 2 10's (if Jewells not staying) at least one more lock and I'd like another centre please, (we struggled a bit this year, with some injuries and poor form, losing Hal now so another one please).

Great summary and allows us to see exactly what's happened. I hope Seb and James stay.

No 10 is critical.

1. Table doesn't show our two new recruits.

2. Doesn't look like many will be leaving other than those already know.

This leaves space for Quins to putting resources into 2 quality fly halves (1 being a long term prospect), a big ugly prop, and a mean ball winning 2nd row - all of international calibre.

McMillan and Tiesi are both in there

Out of those, the prop's not gonna happen. We have 4 good first team worthy props in Aston, Rossy, Ceri and John Brooks, plus two youngsters in Rogers and Lambert.

Lockwise, we've been linked to Dan Vickerman of the Waratahs and Oz.

Fly half, we'll only need one, with Seb being the long term prospect.

Mickey Pointing is a hooker (and has played back row for the As). And another couple of academy names - Greg Bateman (a prop, I presume is still with us) and Joe Trayfoot (back row).

QP - Pointing is down in the club programme as a prop, but am prepared to be corrected, the other two guys don't feature in the programme, they may be Associated pro's who are at school like Stegman was. The guys with the (A) after their name are the ones who have signed academy pro contracts. We do seem to have an number of young players associated with us who are not soley part of our academy!

Bateman used to have a full profile in the academy section but it disappeared!! He was in Eng U18 a year ago, so is prob not still in school - anyone know what's happened to him? I haven't seen his name on an A team sheet this season.

Trayfoot was I think signed at the same time as York and Lowe.

It looks as if Neil McMillan is already training with you, as we were told by someone with a connection to the Ulster Branch that he has been freed up from his remaining weeks of his deal, so as to go over to England and get himself ready for the next season (like i've previously posted on the subject, he's been unlucky with the injuries over the Years) - we still hold his playing registration though, so he wouldn't be available for selection this season

I heard that Greg Bateman left some time ago.

does anybody worry that the length on most of these contracts is very short. its only because personally i wld luv to see the like of Care and Brown etc commit themselves to longer term deals or is this something that happens in most clubs with players generally only signing 2 yr contracts?

Re: Players for Next Season

You only ever really see 1, 2 or 3 year contracts, I can't see players or clubs really wanting to make them much longer

Re: Players for Next Season

Most clubs won't commit to signing any players for longer than 3 Years, due to any potential Injuries that may be sustained and having to keep a player on who is just taking up wages

I do believe that Bateman did leave and that Pointing is preferred at hooker. Whilst Chris York, Joe Marler, Sam Smith and George Lowe are all currently in their last year at school and so starting full time academy contracts this pre-season. Joe Trayfoot still has another year of school (I think)!!
