TONIGHT: Rosslyn Park London Floodlit 7s
By Prof May 7 2008
Harlequins defend their London Floodlit Sevens title at Rosslyn Park tonight (Wednesday). The tournament starts at 5pm when the Army packed with exciting Fijians plays Cambridge University. The Quins squad is due to be packed full of some of our Academy stars alongside veterans like Andy Gommarsall.

The tournament comprises four pools of three teams, playing in a round-robin format to produce the four semi-finalists.

Pool A: Richmond, Army, Cambridge University.
Pool B: Rosslyn Park, London Irish, Oxford University.
Pool C: Saracens, London Welsh, London Scottish.
Pool D: Harlequins, Esher, Loughborough University.

The tournament has been allocated a top team of match officials headed by World Cup referee Wayne Barnes.

This is the 33rd running of the London Floodlit Sevens - the floodlights at Rosslyn Park were a gift from former player, fervent Park member and film star Oliver Reed.

5.20pm London Irish v Oxford University.
5.40pm Saracens v London Welsh.
6pm Harlequins v Loughborough University.

Your in the final against the Army who put us (Irish) out in one semi while you were beating Sarries.

Amesbury, Turnar Hall and Gomersall all playing and looked good You won you two pool matches very easily.

Having seemd very strong against Esher and Saries, the wheels came off in the final, losing to guest stars Fiji.

A good evening in the balmy environs of Rosslyn Park.

I would single out Charlie Amesbury and Seb Stegman as the stars, but that is probably a little unfair to the rest of the squad.

Some pics tomorrow maybe

Gutted I didn't make it but the spirit was overwhelmed by the flesh. 5 games in 8 days, a drive to and from Llanelli and the sponsors night finally took its toll.

More info please on Seb Jewell and Ryan.
Really just checking there will be nothing impeding their dancing skills for Tuesday night!(Sm105)

Tanks for the updates one and all! Sounds like a good night missed (grrr!). And good to hear the "youngsters" doing so well.

Managed to flog down there from Bedfordshire, well worth the effort, a proper sevens tournament. Just re-inforced my vow from last August not to bother with Middlesex Sevenns again, at least until the teams start to take it seriously.
Very impressed with all the players and a graet turn out by a large proportion of the full squad acting as water carriers.
Very impressed with Seb Stegman, he really has some gas, I would be very surprised if he was not faster that Ugo and Stretts. Young Mr Gomarsall still has a turn of speed as well!
For Babs, Ryan looked like a 12 year old in the final when comparing his physical size with the Fijians, had a good tournament nonetheless.
A good team effort and bodes well for the future.

It was a shame that the wheels came off in the final, but perhaps not surprising since the team hadn't had any practice at all.

Stegmann continues to impress, everyone had their moments but the defence in the final let us down

It certainly was a fine night, the weather was so much nice than the year before!

Would some kind soul send me the final score? It was a long wait between the end of our semi and the final; my daughter was feeling decidedly unwell so we regretfully headed off home before the final started. The other person in our party was from the Army but will be a Quins STH next year, so we all had an interest in the Final.
I agree with other postings that many of our boys put up a great show. It was a lovely evening and perfect to be at a "proper" 7s event. It will definitely go into my calendar for next year. The GP 7s is now such a lack lustre affair -shame!
