After a turbulent match for the men’s team, the Harlequin Ladies took to the hallowed ground of the Stoop for a league clash against Wasps Ladies. Passions were running high: a combination of nerves, excitement and eagerness led to stormy debut for this season’s team.

Quick thinking from the adrenaline-charged starting line upproduced a strong run down the massive pitch with a beautiful finish over theline by centre Jayne Goodliffe. Continuing our decisive start, she also placed a perfectly aligned kickover the posts.

This was a contentious match for both teams, with crucialleague points in the balance. Every inch of ground was hard-fought and the pressure began to show whenWasps penetrated the Quins defence to score an equalising try. However the samepressure was also telling for Wasps, who failed to convert their hard-won try. This was then followed, upsettingly for the home team (and spectators on thesidelines) with another un-converted try for Wasps.

Some fabulous work by the intensely focused forwards andsome fantastic rucking, helped the backs shore up the tight score with aresolute try from centre Sarah Butler. Our Kiwi fly half, Amy Gibbons, stepped the game up another notch byconverting the try and the kick off placed the ball squarely back in Waspshands.  They capitalised on thispossession by putting through another try and despite previous near-misses,placed the ball comfortably over the posts to strengthen the numbers in lightsabove our heads.

As the game wound down and tiredness crept up on both teams,an unfortunate penalty against Quins Ladies gave Wasps the opportunity to eventhe scoreline. A nice little drop over the posts would have set the Ladies onthe back foot, but the opposition kept hope alive for Quins and the impetus tocontinue the fight for possession when the kick failed to find its target.  As we drew closer to the final whistle, and the spectators of both teams held their breathe counting the last secondsdown, a final kick into touch by back row Jo Ballentine brought the match to adecisive close in the favour of the victorious Mighty Quins Ladies.

Next week sees the team playing away to Thurrock who, havingjust been promoted are sitting at the top of the league. We all wait with batedbreath to see what the weekend will bring for the Ladies, good luck girls!
