Quins Ladies took on Chesham on a blustery and cold remembrance day Sunday (09 Nov 08). Having been defeated by the league leaders the previous week, Quins were back on home turf against the team who were bottom and the Ladies were determined not to lose for a second consecutive week.

The feeling of beating Wasps was still verymuch on the minds of the team, but also the way in which the team had beendefeated at Thurrock. Ben the HLFC coach made sure that everyone was in theright frame of mind for the game they were about to part take in and that wasto win.

A 2 minute silence for remembrance tookplace before Quins kicked off. Quins were given an early scrum soon after towhich ball was passed out to Sarah Butler who made a good run through thecentre. Quins were again on the attack, and a pass by Amy Gibbons to SarahButler who this time managed to get through the Chesham defence to score thefirst try of the game. The try was converted by Jane Goodliffe.

Quins wanted to capitalize on thepossession they had but were pushed back by Chesham into their own half.Following a scrum, Laura Quinn Picked the ball quickly and passed the ball outto Michelle Roast, who passed it out to the backs to gain the territory theyhad just lost. Jane Goodliffe kicked the ball down towards the try line but wasunlucky in not being able to ground the ball before it went out of the deadball line.

Chesham were fighting despite spending mostof the time in their half, and when they decided to kick from the 22 yard line,Jo Ballentine caught the ball, which was quickly recycled by the forwards andshift hands to the backs with interplay by Zoe Jeanes and Catherine Smith. Thebreakdown saw Amy Smith pick and go and run 10 metres to score. Jane made theconversion.

Quins continued to penetrate the Chesham defence. Kay ReesKicked the ball which was chased down by Sarah Butler, which then saw a turnover and a pass out to the wing for Steph Gagne to score. The pass out to Stephwas deemed by the referee as forward, which meant the try was disallowed. Fromthe line out minutes later Quins stole the ball which went out to the backs.Kay Rees ran straight through the Chesham defence to score under the post, withJane making the conversion.

Quins were unlucky not to score again as LauraQuin made a decisive tackle on the Chesham full back, with Isia Storey, Sarahand Jane all supporting each other but were unlucky not to score in the corner,as the ball was seen as being out on the touch line.

Another 2 tries from Quins quickly followedwith Kay Rees running half the pitch to score under the post and with Janekicking the ball over the Chesham defence to score in the corner.

Half Time score: Quins Ladies 33 – Chesham0.

After the break Quins started as stronglyas they had finished the first half. The ball went from the right to the leftwhere Laura Quinn finished the move with a try in the corner.

Quins repeatedly gave away penalties whichsaw Quins in their half. With the number of penalties against Quins givenChesham pushed their way over the try line to score. Quins kept their headsheld high and proud and showed their strength of character by not letting thenumber of penalties just given against them get to them. From a scrum, Laurapicked the ball and passed to Michelle Roast. Quins were making ground againwhich saw the backs play some of their moves.

From a Chesham line out ClaireBrazier-Kobus stole the ball, and with some resolute defending stopped Cheshamfrom gaining any ground, but despite the effort this was short lived as Quinswere penalized for not rolling away which lead to Chesham muscling over theline to score from close range.

From the kick, Quins put more pressure onChesham. Michelle Roast charged down a Chesham kick to score. Chesham had a lotof the possession towards the end of the game but could not get through theQuins defence. An excellent tackle by Catherine Smith prevented Chesham gettingnear their try line and with Quins managing to steal the ball and kick the ballout to touch saw the end of the game.
