"MD: Well i´m not sure me scoring in Otley was up there with one of the top pics for Quins fans..."

.. well it is for me Mel. I have that picture on my desk as a reminder never to give up. It epitomises the spirt of that ND1 season, and I think it will always be part of my best Quins memories.

Has anyone decided to take him up on his offer of personal training - obviously I would but being the perfect physical specimen that I already am he wouldn't have much work to do winking smiley

Former Harlequins centre Mel Deane has revealed he will be registered to play for Richmond this season, but will only pull on his boots in an emergency.

The former Connacht man returned to west London this summer after two seasons playing in the Magners League having been offered the role of fitness and conditioning guru with director of rugby Geoff Richards’ National Division Two outfit.

Deane, 34, started his professional career at the Athletic Ground 13-years ago - before the club went bust - and went on to enjoy a successful spell at the Stoop after a brief stint with Sale Sharks.

The Teddington-based fitness instructor, who had spoken of running a pub in his retirement from the game, has been putting Richmond through their paces during pre-season.

And he insists that alone is enough to put him off pulling on a shirt this season in what will be a fiercely competitive league with near neighbours Rosslyn Park spending heavily as they bid for the title.

“When you see them in action you realise there are some big boys out there at this level, so I’m not so sure how much I’ll be involved,” he said.

“They want me to register in an emergency, but it will be difficult to have the players’ respect if I’m trying to be one of the boys as well as trying to improve their strength and fitness in training.

“Some can do it, but I’m not sure I will be able to.”

Deane is in the process of setting up his own business - www.meldeanefitness.co.uk - and has been taking tips from one of boxer Amir Khan’s fitness specialists, as he hopes to bring elite conditioning to the average joe.

But rugby remains his first love and he admits he is delighted to be back in town.

“There are a few familiar faces about at the club from the old days, which is great, and it is very nice to be back. Rugby boys are the same the world over,” he added.

“ I’m mainly concentrating on the fitness side of things, but I will be able to lend my rugby knowledge - mainly restricted to the contact area I would think - when the season gets underway.

“We’ve got a pre-season trip to Brive, so I think I’ll see a bit more of what we are about then.”
