It may well be a cliché, but Harlequins season stats NOW. With cup action done and dusted for another year, apart from Pride Quins have to play to secure a good final position in the premiership table. After a poor start languishing at the foot of the table, Quins pulled themselves up to a creditable sixth place by Christmas, only to fall back to seventh when the Premiership competition took a break for a month. The next month will be a defining one for Quins as it will dictate which European Competition we will be next season. The month starts with a very challenging away game down at Gloucester against a side that has also struggled this season. Currently lying in ninth place in the table, but only 3 points below Quins, but they are still in Europe, being in the final eight of the Amlin Cup. Just six points separate the teams between 6thand 11th place in the table, it could not be much tighter. The top five in The Premiership have just broken clear with a six point buffer from this chasing pack.
Quins need to put their frustrations aside and need the supporters to get behind them. Nick Evans said this week that last week’s match against Gloucester was a frustrating one; it was good for him with a fine brace of tries, but Quins to their eye off the ball in the second half. Evans stated that they want to do week in the LV= Cup as it was another route to Heineken cup action next season, a route now closed. Frustration is probably an understatement; Quins should have capitalized on their strong position and sealed the game immediately in the second half. Despite the fact that many of the Quins regulars were away on England duty Quins fielded a team that was more than capable of winning. Frustration compounded with the missing Care, Easter, Strettle and notably Marler all having absolutely storming games in their England shirts. Robshaw and Monye were also much missed.
Quins have won just one match in 2010 away against London Irish. A very strong defence of their lead secured the victory, something that was missing last weekend, in a game that also had a lead that was squandered. We need to win, the team seem to have forgotten how to do that, as Winning is habit forming. There is no doubt that both teams will be up for this match and as we have seen in recent years the fixtures between these two teams have been very exciting with close results, however on their current form, and with so many first team players unavailable I regret but I can’t see Quins prevailing this weekend, although they should come away with a bonus point.
After Gloucester Quins have Northampton at home, London Irish away followed by Worcester at home. We need to put some points on the board from ALL these matches
Ironically Ian Mc Geechan who was for so long linked with a position at Harlequins at theend of last year has joined Gloucester in an advisory role
Come on YouQuins!
