The A League Nears Its Conclusion
By AlanQuin
March 30 2011
Unheralded and unsung, the concluding battles of the Aviva A League are fast approaching. Harlequins have two fixtures remaining against Wasps on Monday 4th April at The Stoop and on the following Monday 11th April against Bath United at The Recreation Ground.

Harlequins have made the final stages of the competition, of which they were the first winners, for the third year in succession and a single league point from their two remaining games will guarantee a home semi-final on 25th April against Leicester Tigers who finished second to an unbeaten Sale in the Northern Conference.  The other semi-final will be between Sale and Bath or London Irish or Saracens depending on results in the next two weeks.

The final will be between the winners of the two semi-finals on 2nd May at the home ground of the finalist who had scored more tries in the first ten rounds of the league.  Currently Harlequins have scored 38 tries and are well ahead of all other potential finalists.

A further record about to fall is Ian Humphreys; points record for an A League season of 118 points. Rory Clegg needs nine more points to overtake that total.

Sale have scored 37 tries in 9 games and we have scored 38 in 10 games, so it looks like the final will be away if we play against Sale if they make it or at home if it's against anyone else.

But the Northern Conference play their tenth game on 4th April. Sale could be whitewashed! A possible although unlikely outcome for a team that has won all 9 out of 9 so far!

We have two games left to play while Sale have only one, thanks to there being only 6 teams in their league. Do they divide the tries into the number of games played? It would seem a bit unfair otherwise, in favour of the southern winners. Mind you, if it gives Quins an advantage I'm not that bothered!
