Fixtures For New Season Launched

With due ceremony BT Sport, exercising its opportunity as the new broadcaster of Aviva Premiership Rugby assembled the Rugby Press, or those who are not still in Australia, in the BT Tower to launch the fixtures for the season 2013/2014.  The view from the 34th Floor was excellent and one not seen by your correspondent since the tower opened to the public in 1966.

Introduced by Lawrence Dallaglio, supported by four Directors of Rugby including Harlequins’ own Conor O’Shea, and some players including Matt Banahan, Tom Homer and Tom Varndell, it soon became apparent that the most important promise of the new regime was that they would televise three matches every week end in guaranteed time slots, There will be one match on Friday at 7.45 p.m. while the Saturday match will be at 3.15 p.m. with a Sunday match at 2.0 p.m.   The assurance was that these slots were fixed and permanent.  Clearly if that promise is kept there will be much greater satisfaction among the match going affcionados and an end to variety of times and days previously common.

But all is not new and virtually all the former ESPN broadcast team are now part of BT Sport. Simon Green, Head of BT Sport said:  “BT Sport is the new home of club rugby and we’ll be broadcasting 69 live and exclusive Aviva Premiership Rugby games across the season. We have a fantastic rugby team in place. Hosted by Craig Doyle, commentary will be by Nick Mullins and Alastair Eykyn who will be joined by BT Sport rugby experts, Lawrence Dallaglio, Ben Kay, Austin Healey and Matt Dawson.  Reporting duties fall to Sarra Elgan and Martin Bayfield.

“I’m also delighted to announce a new Wednesday night show, Rugby Tonight, which will be hosted by Matt Dawson, Craig Doyle, Martin Bayfield and Sarra Elgan, which will offer a mixture of rugby analysis, debate and lively entertainment.”

The proof of the pudding will be in the viewing.  Meanwhile analysis of the opening series of fixtures reveals that Harlequins start as the second match of the London Double Header against London Wasps and their matches are televised five times in the first seven weeks.  BT Sport are also covering the JP Morgan Asset Management Sevens and the World Club Sevens in full.

(apologies: This should have gone up a week ago, but due to an email issue it was missed. – DOK)
