VICTORY AT KINGSHOLM: Gloucester 15 - 22 Harlequins

Miracles take a little longer. In recent years matches between Gloucester and Harlequins have always been won by the home side. But after a drought that had lasted fifteen years, Harlequins achieved victory at Kingsholm defeating Gloucester 15 – 22.

Gloucester were soon the beneficiary of the referee’s whistle and two early penalties allowed Twelvetrees to kick the home team into a 6 – 0 lead. It might have been greater had his third attempt not drifted past the outside of the posts.   A concerted and threatenimg attack on the Quins’ try line followed that was defended fiercely and ended with a determined choke tackle resulting in turnover in possession. But another flowing move down the Cherry and White’s left wing was only stopped by a determined joint tackle from Walker and Lowe that held up their full-back, Cook, inches from scoring. Two more successful penalty kicks doubled the Gloucester score and after twenty-six minutes Quins were twelve points in arrears.

Then a break from Walker and a close race to his chip ahead caused Sharples to knock on and gave Quins an attacking scrum on the Gloucester five metre line. Quins were awarded a penalty at the scrum and made their intentions clear as Evans chipped nonchantly to the corner. Quins held their ball at the line out and drove powerfully over the Gloucester try line for Nick Easter to touch down for the try. Evans kicked the conversion to reduce the home lead to 12 – 7.

In what remained of the half both Evans and Twelvetrees missed kicks at the post , but Evans also slotted one successfully to make the half time score 12 -10.

The second half started with Quins retaining possession through numerous phases until a knock on brought the attack to an end. A good run along the wing by Lindsay-Hague ended when he was tackled into touch ten metres short. Meanwhile, Twelvetrees missed with his seventh and eighth penalty kicks at the posts.

Quins’ forwards were now rampant as they gained a penalty at the scrum. Evans found a good touch thirty metres from the Gloucester line. Once again Quins produced a superb driving maul that rolled majestically and irresistibly over the line by the posts for Wallace to score Quins’ second try. Evans kicked the easy conversion and Quins led 12 – 17. Almost immediately , hoever, they conceded another penalty that Aled Thomas, who had taken over kicking duty, slotted successfully to narrow the lead.

Gloucester now attacked with great determination while Quins defended tenaciously and effectively to re[el them, The result was sealed when Quins had a scrum just inside the Gloucester twenty-two, The ball squirted out and Dickson collected it and finding a Gp in the defence put through a low bouncing kick to the right corner where Charlie Walker, at full speed, collected the ball and crossed for a brilliant try. Evans failed with the conversion and only two minutes remained. Gloucester was carefully resisted until the final whistle.

It was a notable victory and wearing proper Harlequins shirts too!!
