Previous meetings have mostly resulted in an easy win for Quins. Indeed, in 2003/2004 the first of the meetings between the two teams resulted in a total rout with the young Quins side running in 14 tries with Henry Barratt and Tom Williams each scoring hat-tricks and Adrian Jarvis converting 11 goals. Saracens were so poor that I accused them in my report of down-valuing the A League. In the return match, away, the score was closer at 3 – 31 despite an opposition team containing more senior players.
Last season, the away fixture at St. Albans saw another big score when Quins ran out winners by 19 – 57 scoring 9 tries in a performance that Quins’ skipper, Andre Vos, who watched the game from the dugout, described the skills of the Quins’ youngsters as “awesome”. The home fixture was a disappointing one, despite a victory, with Quins scraping home 8 – 6 at The Stoop.
Last week the Saracens lost by a single point at Sunbury to London Irish, 34 -33 and scored three tries to the Exiles’ four. At a notoriously difficult venue and hard opponents, the narrow result indicates that they seem to be taking the A league more seriously. However, if Quins play as they did last week against Wasps A they should prevail and keep an unbeaten record against Saracens and in the league.
The game is at Old Albanians Rugby Club, Wollams Playing Fields , 160 Harpenden Road, St Albans AL3 6BB. on Monday the 12th at 7.30pm. Admission £5 per adult, £1 per child.
