Know the Ground - Polson Bridge (Lanson)
By Neal Roff
June 12 2007
Following on from Chris Hoddles article, I decided to give you the run down on Launceston RFC or The Cornish All Blacks as they are now know (CABs for short) . Of course most people round here will still call them Lanson, just to confuse you a little more. When I moved down here nearly 6 years ago, I was looking for some Rugby action, as you do, and finally got to see Lanson V Pirates in Div2.

Pirates had already been promoted to D1 and Lanson were fighting for their lives (were relegated). It was too good to miss. It was that good that I set up camp at Polson Bridge. It is a wonderful little Rugby Club in the grand old tradition of Rugby Clubs. I say little because despite their elevation to the heady heights of D1, this is still a small club that represents a small Town. When I say small Town, the 2001 census gives the population at just over 7000. Although with the catchment area it probably swells to near 10000.  Don't dismiss them because of this though. They are fiercely proud of what they have achieved and rightly so. Their playing budget last year was less than half of Carlos's salary and will not increase that much this season which makes their promotion even more amazing.

Polson Bridge

Formed in 1948, they started life up in the Town but in 1969 grabbed the opportunity to move 2 miles out to Polson Bridge. Now you all know something of Launceston if only that it lies near the Cornwall/Devon border. (Cornwall/England down here). Polson Bridge actually lies ON the border. The junior pitches run up to the Tamar and the Bridge is behind the goal of one pitch. When the Tamar floods (at least once a year) it runs onto the junior pitches. In fact, it is one of a few things that remind me of Old Scouts. Remember before the flood defences went up? The main pitch is not bad though and holds up pretty well all season.  Pitch

The Ground is set in  fabulous countryside and on a good day, you can't watch rugby in a better location (well, maybe St Ives). The only problem as far as Saints Fans are concerned is that it is small. The official capacity is listed as 4,000 but I have my doubts although a new car park is being planned which could free up a large bank at one end and a temp stand is planned. Even so, this is one to get your tickets for early. There is a small stand on the Clubhouse side but the rest is standing round the pitch with no terracing. The Clubhouse is not large but there is a big beer tent next to the stand and I feel sure that more will be put in place for the the Saints, Plymouth, Exeter and Pirates games all of which will test the Club to it's maximum. I do know they will relish the challenge and you can be sure of a great trip down. There is usually some entertainment after matches and food (limited range, good prices) is always available although they are usually a little busy with the pl ayers around 5.30 pm.
They have been busy recruiting this year and many of you that watched this years county final will have seen 5 existing Cornish All Blacks on show with Devon. They have so far added Tony Roques the England Sevens Captain, Matt Jess from Pirates (a bit of a coup)  plus Bryn Jenkins (Albion), Gareth Tedstone, Mike Rawlings and Lewis Webb all from Pirates Academy, also  a young fly half, Mike Provis whom I saw a while back at U16 level and was mightily impressed with . All are young Cornish lads with a lot to prove. They are coached by Jon Hill and Chris Brown. Two promising young guns that have worked wonders with so few resources.  Other new signings can be seen at the Official web site

For those that might want to make a weekend of it, there are plenty of options in the locality, The North Coast is only 20 minutes away as is Dartmoor. The Town itself is old and well worth a visit although drinking holes are a bit sparse in this neck of the woods. Real ale drinkers are in for a delight, the Club serves Sharps and choices  away from the Club include locally brewed beers from  Ring o' Bells, St Austell and Skinners. All superb. If you want help with somewhere to stay and/or visit let me know and I can offer suggestions. One bit of advice, make sure you have very warm and waterproof clothing, although it can be shirt sleeve weather in December it can just as well be pretty awful and the ground is exposed. Don't let that put you off though. If you want to experience a “proper” Rugby Club, mark this one down. You will not be disappointed. Just remember that you can fit the population of Lanson into Franklins Gardens TWICE. A couple of links to help you out. http://www.cornishallblacks.co.uk/ The Official site http://www.launcestonrfc.co.uk Unofficial but can be informative. If you want to chat to the Lanson supporters then you need to visit  http://www.trelawnysarmy.org.uk/ look for the forums and Lanson have their own thread. A word of warning though, don't get involved in any disputes between Cornish Clubs and DON'T call them English. Mind you this board has gone a little quiet, probably due to the squabbling that went on last season.  One last thing. If you go into Town, try parking in the Race Hill car park. The view on a clear day is to die for.

Excellent article - enjoyed reading it. The ground looks good and will look even better when they finish it! or should I say , start it. It reminds me of some of the groudns around here , Old Northamptonians, Old Scouts - or in deed, the Saints training pitches at the back of the stadium. Wonder if they have any lights?

So now all they need is the electricity to go with them...

Only joking: it's a nice neck of the woods, been past Lanson many times, never got to visit though! Problem is, the timing of the game is unfortunate - mid December ain't exactly the easiest time to persuade the lads they want a weekend in Cornwall!

Sorry Kernewek, you are quite correct. It got lost in trying to work out which new signings to mention.

I meant to say that Pirates were miffed at not resigning him.(Sm100)

"The boys" is the generic term for me and my mates Neal - I am the youngest (a tad under 40!!) The fact that it's that near to the "C" word (remember children, Uncle Ad doesn't like people using the "C" word before December 1) doesn't make it any easier. But you never know... I might be able to work my magic!

Angelsaints - I'll see your Tintagel and raise you the Cobweb at Boscastle... (up until this year stopped for about seven/eight years at a campsite in Bossiney every summer) - however, they (the campsite, that is) have committed the cardinal sin of trying to charge Welly 25 bob in the pound (in my opinion!)... as a consequence, Cornwall's loss is Dorset's gain...

I see Wellsaint. I agree the fixture does not fall at a very good time which is a huge shame.

The Bossiney camp site is pretty typical of whats happening in N.Cornwall at the moment. The Padstow/Rock effect is spreading fast. An example is a place near me (my daughter works there sometimes) that now charges almost £800 for a wooden chalet and these are not luxury places, think Butlins. Funny thing is they are not very busy so far. Can't imagine why.

No,sorry Paul. They do have a cow bell mind. A couple of the barmaids are pretty hot too. Damn, thats the objectivety gone out the window.
