News: Northampton continue ND1 run against Albion
By Howlin September 30 2007
It's nowhere near Christmas and yet this doesn't stop Tescos filling their aisles with seasonal goods. It is also nowhere near to Easter but this didn't stop Saints serving up another curate’s egg for us to ponder. It all started with Saints kicking the right way (I prefer when they kick towards the South stand in the second half).

Northampton Saints v Plymoth Albion.

National Division 1.  Round 5.  29 September  2007

Result: Northampton Saints 34, Albion 15

But more changes in the backs to consider. Myler was at 10 Kydd in at 13 and Bruce out to the wing at 11. Last season constant tinkering in the backs was due to injuries. The result was a lack of understanding and cohesion. This season it is seemingly squad rotation, although I wonder whether Jim is still seeking his best combination. A welcome return for Neil Starling coming on for Kydd on 76mins will only add to that quandary. But it is a welcome problem to have.

It was certainly a stuttering start as the Saints drove forwards and keen to get the ball wide early there were a few inaccurate passes and fumbles. Some of this was caused by the forwards linking play though rather than the backs with Hopley on the day being a little below the high standards he has set over recent performances.

In the eighth minute however Bruce, Bruce, Bruce cut in from the left onto a sublime inside pass from Carlos and ran a diagonal line reminiscent of Cohen away against Cardiff a few years back, the kind that makes defences look daft. Then leaping like a salmon from a bubbling highland burn finished with a swallow dive twice as high as Cohen's famous one against the AB's. The king is dead, long live the king ?

Bruce Dive

As Myler converted I think (I was momentarily distracted by two rather attractive blondes). All was well with the world.

Saints continued to dominate possession, although the lineout was still problematic, and went further ahead with a Myler penalty on 12mins. Plymouth were playing with some ambition when they had possession but rarely looked like breaking through the Saints line. Both sides were guilty of handling errors, but saints continued to look the more dangerous in attack. Then on 26mins Kydd was sent to the bin for a trip and the resultant pen gave Plymouth the rare opportunity to camp in the Saints twenty two. Plymouth did what we had been told Plymouth do best and set up a maul. Penalty given, another maul, penalty given (word with Bruce ) another maul. But to no avail. Saints cleared their lines and half time was looming. The supporters whose priority it is to be first in the pie queue started to wend their way safe in the knowledge that Saints had secured a comfortable , if not totally convincing half time lead.

But no. The ball is turned over and a swift handling move brings Plymouth back to the Saints twenty two. The ball is recycled and this time Plymouth do not mess up the three man overlap and on 37mins Cruickshank touches down in the corner as Digger tries in vain to get across in time to stop him. A good try and a wake up call ? Well yes, a wake up call to Plymouth as from the restart Saints press hard in attack and turn the ball over again. Gibson bursts away on the right wing. Carlos waits, lines him up, shows him the outside and bang. Gibson gratefully takes it and runs past whilst having the time to adjust his hair and polish his nails before touching down in the corner. This time Laidlaw converts. The half time whistle blows and there are a few glum Saintly faces as they troop to the bar with the score 13-12.Digger Try

The second half starts with the saints pressing again. On 45 mins Digger crosses the line after Vass steals the ball from a Plymouth scrum and it is swiftly passed down the line. Now the score is a more comfortable 18-12. Time for a Saintly overture ?  Myler converts 20-12.

Fox TryThen on 54 mins a penalty to Saints allows Myler to push the ball into the Plymouth twenty two. A free kick from the resultant lineout gives Emms the chance to go on the charge and Fox takes over to barrel the ball over from close range and carrying seven Plymouth defenders with him. (N.B. this may be a slight exaggeration) Myler again converts from wide out on the right.

So on 56mins with the score a more comfortable 27-12 Rudski comes on for Toops and there is another 24 mins to push on for the bonus point.

Plymouth have another ideas though as they go on the attack and are given another penalty. This time they go for the sticks and Laidlaw brings the score to 27-15

Saints ring the changes and Ashton comes on for Diggin and Shields makes his debut coming on for Ward. Sadly for saints his throwing doesn't start any better than Ward's as saints lose the lineout from a penalty kicked to the corner. Saints continue to attack but frustration is setting in. The referee stops a tap penalty and Myler then misses the kick for the posts. 65 mins gone and big Damo comes on for Lordy.

Still the saints attack stutters as Kydd chooses to pass to someone in C blockStarling Returns (well they are wearing the same shirts !)  71 mins now gone and saints are trying to force it in attack as they desperately seek the bonus point. Plymouth are creaking now but the saints need to show greater patience and method. 74 mins another penalty into the corner. This time the line out is won but the backs mess it up. 76 mins more changes, Brake on for Vass and Starling for Kydd. (fantastic to see you playing again Neil) 77 mins now gone and Saints still error strewn as they force the passes trying to score the elusive fourth try. 79mins gone now and a cross field kick to Ashton raises the crowds hopes, but great cover defence forces the ball from his hands. Minutes later Ashton bursts through again. He runs a diagonal and can smell the whitewash. But once again great cover defence stops him at the death and naively he tries to offload and throws the ball forward.

82 mins now as Plymouth desperately try and wind down the clock by delaying the put in at the scrum, three times it has been reset. Saints pile the pressure on the scrum and eventually the ball is turned over. The backs do their job and out it goes to the wing where ....Christian Short is waiting ! Thankfully the lock goes over , Myler converts and Saints have the bonus point.

Well Ajack didn't renew his season ticket because he felt there would be a lack of competition at FG this season. I suppose it never looked like Saints were going to lose this game but it just wouldn't be Saints if they didn't keep us on the edge of our seats, this time seeking the all important bonus point. A brief look at the table will tell you just how important securing these extras are. Saints are not the finished article yet but later in the season a front row of Smith, Hartley and Murray with Soane coming on as impact will improve the front five play in many aspects of the game. Nierkerk will , I guess add to the squad too !  The backs , despite all the handling errors still look dangerous and the ambition is there to see. Five points, job done.

Fox was given the man of the match. My shout would have been Myler who for me is coming on very nicely. I can see the influence of both Grayson and Carlos. Now that's not a bad mix in a fly half is it ? Also for me the enjoyment of rugby is not just about the match itself. My day started in the Malt Shovel at 12.00pm and ended in the same place about eleven and a half hours later ! Special mention to Tina, Mo, Chris, Sheila, Lynn, Justin and Dave, Sheila's lover (sorry Kev) from Plymouth. Hope you enjoyed your day and had a safe journey home. Don't take this the wrong way when I say I dearly hope we only spend one season in this league. But I for one am enjoying every moment.

Great report, Howlin. In fact, with great respect to t'others beforehand, my vote for report of the season so far.

Agree about Smiler - his tackling is top-notch too.

Incidentally, those blondes - were they the ones Bernie was chasing down the sidelines like a sheepdog?

Good report Howlin.

That last try was like waiting for a train on the Hammersmith & City line....you know it SHOULD be there but you're just very grateful when it eventually does turn up

Howlin you have some splendid quotes in there, I loved the blondes bit but my favourite has to be...

"The supporters whose priority it is to be first in the pie queue"

Agree 100% about Myler.

Great reporting - conveys how nail biting watching Saints can still be at times.

delicious irony in shorty getting the try at the death.

he had what i hope was the worst game of his career. he appeared in the wrong place with monotonous regularity, overran, fumbled, dropped, got in the way , was a shadow of himself at the lineouts and fairly useless at restarts.

i was hoping the coaches would take him off early as his confidence was obviously shot.

however, he never stopped trying and i was delighted he got his try.hopefully they will put an arm round him, stop messing him around, work on his good points and build his confidence back up, as he's the salt of the earth.

we should be stripping other teams' lineouts in the second half of games, as we have analysis equipment which is simply not available to our opponents . shorty has shown he can do this and it's time the forwards fronted up

and they are still playing too high, much too high.

At the autograph session after the game Shorty was claiming that he ran his try in from 20 yards ! [:wor kid:]

Once a scrum half .... always a scrum half

On some the photos it also looks as if he carried Foxy for his try - probably from the half-way line by now (Sm42)

Howlin, great report.

I am surprised though that having mentioned the Malt Shovel you never found room to mention that bloke who was 9 feet 15 inches tall and has caused me neck ache for two days after talking to him.

Our game plan on Saturday seemed to be to run the legs off their forwards. The first kick-off saw us move the ball from deep in our back-right pocket to way up centre-wing left. And it wasn't the only time. While this plan gained us a great amount of territory, the score-board remained stubbornly on zero. We seemed then to revert to a more orthodox strategy of acquiring territory with the boot to see if our playing it through the hands would accrue dividends if played in the last 40 metres instead of all over the pitch.

The irony, of course, was, that having knocked a few balls long, the next time Carlos decided to run from defence, the pattern had been broken and Bruce used his power and pace to cut back through the last defenders for his score. Old adage: mix it up and keep them guessing.

It was really disappointing to lose concentration in the last 10 to 15 minutes of the first half. No chase on a kick followed by a dreadful scramble to cover the chip over the forwards leaving Digger on his backside and Kydd in the sin-bin.

Poor first-up tackling that allowed a succession of rucks in our 22 and such poor defensive communication that left Myler with an impossible task of covering three men.

You can be as caustic as you like about Carlos for the second try just before half-time but please be assured of one thing. Once our first-up tackle had not even checked Gibson's run a try was inevitable. Had Spencer closed the distance between himself and the man any quicker, his right shoulder would have been exposed and weak. His small triumph was that he got his man where he had his best chance but did not have size, power or pace to close him down. Neither, I would suggest, would anyone else in the squad.

Running to score a try is an adrenalin matter. If you believe you have the space, it is a question of commiting all your resources to the execution. Running to execute a tackle is much more technical. You are lining up a moving target and trying to time your intervention between two hard-pumping legs. Very rarely can this be done at full pace. Those that can do it at full pace on a regular basis are special indeed.

And so to the second half. Once again the additive to the half-time cuppa seemed to work wonders. The rugby heads were very much on. In many ways, Diggin's try was the best of the day. It started with a set piece and was taken on by the forwards. Quick recycling through each of three phases drew in defenders rather than the slow version that allows defenders to reorganise away from the tackle area. The last man had Digger coming on to the ball at pace with the option of Spencer outside him.

This and the Fox try 10 minutes later were the only times that our play in the midfield was of the quality required to stop the drift of the defence. Both times the defence was sucked in by forwards driving hard and recycling quickly.

The rest of our play was disappointing. Too many dropped balls, plays forced because we were standing still and not coming on to the ball, firing passes at players who were bound to go into contact rather than to the man that was challenged only by space. A special mention for the Albion 7 at this point. I am confused as to whether he is Bornmann or Kettle but I feel he ought to be renamed Inchcape. He was the rock in the 13 channel on which so many of our attacks were wrecked. When we go down to Devon for the return, it would help if he had a little bell so that we would be aware of the danger and not go so headlong into his strength.

Were it up to me, I would be looking hard at the video this week to target improvements in our alignment. We had an awful lot of territory and possession to have scored only four tries - 25 minutes to score a try against a beaten side? Definitely not good enough. The pressure this put on us towards the end led to some astonishingly poor play.

The last bit of irony was that the man who had probably been most at fault for making us lateral and static made a handling error - probably his only one. His reaction to it was spectacular. The fact that the recovery went to a dummy runner was fortuitous. [There was no way that (a) Christian Short was the intended target of the original move or (b) that the defence ever thought that Christian Short was the target of the move.]

So, when Myler scooped up his knock-on just before it hit the ground and it landed in the grateful hands of the big lock forward, he had practiced a bit of deception that had been missing from his game hitherto. Top marks for Christian Short's reactions and finishing the chance.

thank you for the kind words people.OSB why don't you volunteer for a report yourself ? If only I could have got the phrase " trying to time your intervention between two hard-pumping legs" into my effort ! I know I got hurt the last time I tried (Sm16)

A fine match report from Howlin and expert summing up from OSB.

It's amazing sometimes when you read or listen to people talk post match, and you wonder whether you were at the same game.

Not on both of the above accounts I might add.
