News: The Last Tycoons - Saints at Newbury

St Dom
By Dominic Newbould April 20 2008
Big Jim was right to be wary of Newbury, but his team (still Saints, not yet England) failed to heed the warning. Saints strolled to a 21-0 lead in 30 minutes, then took their collective foot off the gas, and went in at half time lucky to be leading 21-17. What happened? Your correspondent, Saint Dom, tells it how it was…

Northampton Saints win against Newbury

National Division 1.  Round 28, 19th April 2008

Result:

Newbury Blues 22, Northampton Saints 40

The Last Tycoons – Saints Away at Newbury

My fingers are numb, thanks to a bitter north-east wind blowing over the Berkshire chimneys; my head is numb, thanks to the twittering of Paul Flatt in my left ear and the clicking of paparazzo Big Rich, whose big lens swelled and contracted like a Sharky pass in my right ear.

One must survive this test, I thought, one’s readers expect, just as followers of the Saints expect a scintillating win at every venue during our sojourn in the nether regions of National League One. Scintillating, what? You must be daft! What we got was end-to-end stuff, end-of-term frivolity, though one team was focused and desperate to avoid relegation; and the other sniffing the fresh hay in the stable at the end of a long and unwanted journey.

It all began so auspiciously: fireworks, rockets and bangers as the teams ran out; a splendidly muted brass band, playing O Wendy just before the kick-off; the predicted rain stopped, just as we started and – mirabile dictu – in less time than you can say Anti-Social Behaviour Order, young Ashton was touching downAshton Scores beside the (not quite upright) uprights. Smyler converted and… (why not our Bruza? I hear you ask – because he was on the wing and Smyler needs game time), we anticipate a rout. Les chapeaux sur des roues?

For the next 20 minutes, a rout was definitely on the cards: we’ll gloss over a neat interception from Dylan’s pass that almost put Newbury on equal terms and fast-forward to the next try. Brake breaks out from the scrum, fed by Hopley, out to Flash who (not for the last time) unselfishly puts Carlos away for try number two. Smyler knocks it over. So far so good.

Before you can say what next, O scribe? – let me tell you that the Joe Ansbrothird try was a gem… multiple phases, left, right, left, right – with military precision – until Ashton flashes out of phase five to put Ansbro into space. Joe doesn’t need too much encouragement and, swiveling his hips like a flamenco artist in a hurry, he slides past defenders and touches down near enough for Smyler to convert.

Easy, we thought. Easy, thought Saints. Good time to counter attack, thought Newbury and, in a space of ten short minutes, they showed the slick passing and handling that served them so well back at FG last December. Jonny Hylton scored on the right wing, fizzing past Carlos at full-back with ease. Lewitt and Easter (twice) made last-ditch tackles that prevented further scores but Saints conceded a couple of penalties, Saint Tom Smith earned an ear-wigging from Sir (Mark Wilson) and suddenly, sentimental memories of Wally on the wing were resurrected as Blues hooker Fincken swept over the line wide on the left. And in as much time as it takes to miss three tackles, there was one more try when Newbury’s burly No 8, Greg Hayter, crossed the line just left of the posts. Mercifully, the referee whistled for half time.

Hopes rose at the re-start because first Flash – again unselfishly, when he seemed to have the try-line at his mercy – chucked a poor pass at Carlos that was not accepted. Then, after some re-grouping, Saints set up camp with a scrimmage on the line and Tom Smith, a sinner one moment and a Saint the next – scuttled over to put some daylight between Newbury and Northampton. Smyler converted with a fine hoof and Saints were smiling again. Bonus point!

Dylan was finding his target well, especially Hopley at the back of the lineout; Brake, enjoying his first start at scrum half, was growing in confidence and exerting influence on the game; Smyler was prodding and probing, kicking confidently and Lordy seemed to be everywhere, tackling with a vengeance and looking for all the world like Seven Lords a-leaping in the lineout… But then lethargy set in again.

A period of sustained pressure from the Blues was needed to wakeBen Lewitt Saints from their torpor and it was Ben Lewitt, anticipating a contract for next season, who put Saints even further ahead with the fifth try of the afternoon. Newbury just wouldn’t lie down, though and earned their own, fully deserved try bonus, with a well-worked try by centre, Andy Reay.

Saints had the last word with one of the best tries of the day and Flash’s second, taking him to 35 for the season.

The ruthless economics of National League One ordain that Newbury must remain semi-professional, scratching for survival in the bottom half of the division, in spite of their ambitious play and committed support from their community. Their programme featured a photograph of a match at Newbury in 1938 between Saints and the Blues. Newbury won 13-0. They have tradition and class and English rugby will be the better for clubs like Newbury and their supporters, hopefully playing the Premiership clubs again in a reconstituted domestic cup competition from next season.

IJohn Braket is hard to pick a man of the Match after such a patchy performance, but Brake certainly caught the eye as did the back row of Easter, Lewitt and Hopley. The front row was awesome and Ashton could have taken at least two more tries if he had been a little more selfish. Newbury’s fly-half and skipper Tim Walsh starred for the home team.

Two images linger: Ian Vass and Darren Fox, mooching along among the replacements, body-language in rejection for next season.
And two quotes echo as I reflect on the afternoon. First, Newbury’s blind-side flanker, James Doherty after his team scored their fourth, bonus-point try: “Let’s fecking enjoy it”, he bellowed at his team-mates.
Finally, as the team trooped off, I asked Carlos how he enjoyed playing at full-back: “Fecking love it,” was his reply, though his expression said otherwise…

I dunno.

You try and share a little sunshine and wisdom by trying to discuss the surrealist map of the world, rugby reports written before the game, the love handles on the Newbury no 1, my favourite away games of this season, why I hate the Rec, why implementing SAP has proven difficult and costly, and a few other topical subjects that fly into my consciousness and you get accussed of twittering!

Let's try a new tactic next season. We all turn up, and look straight ahead, and don't say a word all the way through the game.

Thanks for the pictorial essay, Rich - much more illustrative than mere words can convey. That's a cracking picture of Brake, flanked by his back-row comrades.

Dunno about that old boy in the hat, though...

Good read, StDom, I missed the first two tries thanks to the queue in the bar for food, I don't think Newbury estimated the size of the visiting support, but a good game, Tom Smith was everywhere (as ever), and Matt Lord had a great game, despite having his left shoulder knocked in a tackle that I thought would see him replaced.

Good report, Dom and good to meet you on Saturday.

For goodness sake, somebody, somewhere get a video of Newbury playing against us and get it circulated to the professional teams in this division.

Tell the DoRs, it's not about beating Newbury. History shows that almost everyone in this league can do that - more's the pity. It's about coming up with a plan to take your rugby to the next level.

Saints going three tries up and Newbury reclaiming that advantage (save for a couple of conversions) speaks volumes about both sides. For Newbury it says much about their spirit and enterprise. It spoke much about their video analysis being spot on. If you run at Saints' forward defence, you will get nowhere. Run where you can get scragged by Murray, Lord or Rae and you will get scragged. There are 30+ videos that demonstrating these facts.

Get round the corner of the Saints' forward defence and we are talking about a different game altogether. It's not like the rest of Saints' defence can't tackle but distort the system and the opportunities to wrong-foot defenders are there to be exploited. Add in a commitment to support and confidence to off-load from tackles and we are talking about exciting, attacking rugby. Put the game plan into the hands of someone like Tim Walsh - no, that's damning with faint praise - put your game plan in Tim Walsh's hands and you can test the best in the league.

Walsh is set to be a casualty of the proposed reorganisation of this tier of the game. That is a crying shame. The league will be poorer for the loss of his talents.

For Saints, being pegged back by three tries in less than twenty minutes says what most of us are aware. This team will struggle at the higher level. Nine new signings may only be the start of the assault on the foothills of the Premiership.

In my view, the hats-on-wheels start, while being a great joy, was not founded on an awful lot except a willingness and an ability to run the ball. Twenty-one points in twenty minutes. Wow!

However, that was when Newbury decided to roll up their sleeves. The pack got stuck in and secured all of its own ball and put on the pressure that saw a ball ricochet from a Saints' scrum. Once the game had an established pattern, it was the Newbury pack that was marginally on top and Walsh who was dictating the game.

Unfortunately for Saints (and this ought to be a warning), they were unable to change the game on the hoof. They appeared to need the half-time break to regroup and, perhaps, receive some well-chosen words of wisdom from Dorian West. Without a 21-point cushion (unlikely to be available against most Premiership opposition) Saints would have been in desperate straits at half-time.

Had it not been for the industry of their back-row trio, Saints would have been in deficit at half-time despite the 21-point start.

The remedy was quite straightforward - stop the Newbury forwards from controlling the game by making them do their primary jobs and beat them there at the coal-face. Two forwards' tries in the third quarter were an indication that Saints, assisted by the wind at their backs, were now in control of the game. You couldn't imagine a team containing, say, Pat Lam, needing to wait until half-time to stop the rot.

There could and should have been more points scored. Spencer dropped a ball on the line; Lordy, whom I never expect to drop a ball or miss a tackle, spurned a chance to add to his try tally by not gathering Tom Smith's neat little pop-pass.

Anyway, back to my original point. Exeter & Nottingham: 5 games, 5 tries. Newbury: 2 games, 7 tries. Thank you for playing some of the best rugby we have seen played aginst us this season. Your 2 bonus points were richly deserved.
