Notes and Queries 11
By St Marlowe August 1 2008
This week’s Notes and Queries is to do with hoaxes. There have been many memorable hoaxes and one – pope Joan - has already appeared on these pages. Some are local, some are international, some are April fool jokes, and some are mind blowing. What is it about hoaxes that means we are all fascinated by them?

If you had the chance and neither money nor time were an obstacle, what hoax would you perpetrate and why? What is the attraction of hoaxes, and why do so many people fall for them?

Daylight Saving Time

Daylight Saving Time is a topic that occupies the press on at least two occasions every year. If we implement this process, what happens to all the daylight that we save?  As there is only a finite amount of daylight, if we are saving time, is another country losing time. What is the origin of this quaint custom, and why did not Northern Rock cash in on an opportunity? Is it a Hoax?

Ben Franklin

Benjamin Franklin was a famous hoaxer, some of his hoaxes, which were actually aimed at discrediting Britain, were not discovered until long after his death. If the art of the hoax was so finely honed in the 1700’s in the colonies, why do Americans have such an underdeveloped sense of irony today?

Regarding Northern Rock, the whole thing a year ago was all a mistake. In Bristol, there's a branch of Northern Rock next door to a sandwich shop. Some bright spark from the local paper obviously saw the queue for the sarnies and thought it was people queueing up to take their money out. Hence the run on the bank - all caused by innocent bystanders waiting to pick up their BLT.

I want to know more about BF's hoaxes especially as my dog's pedigree name 'Franlkin's Benjamin' may explain a few things.

Septics do have a sense of irony. Chandler from Friends, Dr Cox from Scrubs, everyone in MASH, Niles from Frasier. It's just that they have a lower proportion of these wonderful people.

One Friday night in the pub many years ago I managed to convince one of my friends that the government was going to metricate time as part of its commitment to joining the Common Market.

100 seconds in a minute
100 minutes in an hour
20 hours per day (ten in the morning and then in the afternoon)
10 days in a week, with a three-day weekend

We'd only had decimal currency for about eight years by then and the metrication of weights & measures was in progress so it didn't seem to be too much of a flight of fancy at the time.

The biggest hoax of the last 12 months must have been the Chiefs supporters' claim that they would be a shoe-in for promotion.
