Is Strange the Key?
During the summer, the Castle Park outfit had a big change in playing personnel, and, understandably, it is taking time for the new look Knights to settle and find any consistency in their play. Currently lying in 5th place in the table, their position is as much due to the teams they have played rather than a true reflection of the side. They have suffered defeats at London Welsh and Nottingham, and drawn a home game with the Pirates, but have managed to beat the teams who are at the bottom end of the league table. They do, however, come to Leeds on the back of a big win at Sedgely Park last week, even though they only managed to score 4 tries. On the evidence so far, a top six finish will be a reasonable achievement for this weeks visitors, but I will be very surprised if they can press their claims to aspire to this on Saturday. We will welcome back a couple of former Leeds players, and we wish them well. It will be interesting to see how they perform against a very confident Leeds side.
Leeds have done everything required so far this season, The new recruits have all added something to the side, and Jason Strange made a telling contribution on his first start last week. At the time of writing, the side for Saturday has not been announced, but I am sure Key and Back will go again go for experience over youth to ensure we don’t slip up on a potential banana skin. What seemed a tricky fixture 9 weeks ago, now appears much more straightforward...
As far as I am aware, Leeds have not taken one penalty kick at goal in the last three matches, having had the confidence to run the ball at their opponents, but I wouldn’t be surprised if this changes this week, especially early in the game as Leeds seeks to build a platform for another win. I don’t think there is the slightest chance of any complacency creeping in, and I predict a try bonus point win for Carnegie.
Hopefully we will not witness any of the unpleasantness that appeared in last seasons Yorkshire Cup semi final, and I am looking forward to a good game of open rugby. It is difficult to estimate the size of the crowd this week with the game being played on a Saturday, and I for one, think Friday night may have been a better option to draw people in.
I hope the Southstanders will not ‘boycott’ the game, as this deprives the lads of your support. Take advantage of the ‘alternatives’ offered, and before you know it, you’ll be back where you want to be. Looking forward to the game. Enjoy it.
