Harlequins v Saints GP Match Preview
By Robby Richmond
January 29 2009
As we head into February the Saints find themselves almost secure enough in the premiership to stop looking over our shoulder at the budgies and the luckless brizzlers, build on our excellent home form and dream a little dream about something as rare as rocking horse poo!................An away win.

Guinness Premiership Round 13

Harlequins vs. Northampton Saints

Saturday 31st January - The Stoop KO 3pm

Match preview

Sure, as we look forward to the start of the six nations the supporters begin to wonder what effect the loss of Dyl, Big Evil, Fodes, Monty and Scottie Gray will have on the side, its time for our underrated (nationally, not underrated in the realms of Northamptonshire and the surrounding areas) youngsters to step up and show everyone that not only are we stronger in depth than many had given us credit for, but we hit an awful lot harder than our weight might suggest.

Our previous meeting with the hairy ones caused a bit of consternation as it seemed there were a few amongst their number who saw us a soft touch. Ahh, don't our boys love to prove people wrong these days eh?

Sure The queens seem to have earned a large selection of new friends with some dramatic and entertaining live games against Stade Francais, whose reputation, like that of Beer'n'chips, seems to precede them much further than the selection of superstars seem capable of producing. A lesson our own club has learnt in recent years, egos, talent plus a full house stadium do not a good team make.

Still, thanks to the pandering of the Sky broadcast team their two wins against Parrisse and Co. seem to make them one of the finest sides in Europe. No one seems to dare to mention that when you watch the games again and make a point of taking the emotion out of the viewing, they erm, well, they weren't very good games in terms of skills, performance and actually try scoring opportunities.

They came to the Gardens on a high, believing their own hype and we gave them quite a schooling. Though they taught us one when it came to bleating in the press and citing players, which leads me to my next point...

This business of citing people in the press before the Citing officer has any chance to make an assessment. It's for the birds in my opinion. It's just so bloody petty. So while young Mr Skinner may be from this parish, it still seems to me that he needed to pay more attention during the tiger's classroom lessons while in the academy there. Rule number one: people in glass houses...

So if there is any danger of Skinner growing a pair and manning up, that would be great. It's a mans game remember...

I don't normally recognise the RFU for doing anything of merit ever, the long list of things they've naused up over the last few years is longer than a Yes prog-rock acid tinged odyssey. Still introducing former players from the highest level of the game to look over citing committees and disciplinary sessions seems a smart idea, if we can just get that halfwit Blackett to put down his gin and tonic and pay attention to what they say. Here's hoping...

Quins' having reinvented themselves in the eyes of the public has given them more credence than they have normally ever received. With a history of being a ‘cup side' being prevalence by ‘flying high' in the Heineken cup  it seems interesting to me to see if Deano can get his boys to keep their feet on the ground and not look away longingly at the cup quarter final.

Still the side seems a little thin on the ground an a bit of analysis will show that the same 10 or 12 players have played pretty much every game so far this year for the Quins. Are they going to begin to feel it? Well, history suggest yes. Despite having a superb conditioning coach in Gareth Adamson there is only so much they can do to keep these guys playing and playing well. Sooner or later between now and April there is a good chance of the bubble bursting...

It could well start this weekend.

Saints supporters will have been looking to this weekend's game with one confrontation likely to take centre stage above any other. The battle between the Easter brothers sadly it isn't going to happen thanks to the EPS thingymajig. Oh well, the quest to find out who is the better of the two will have wait a little longer. Still we all know that Junior has it in the bag at the moment.

Mark's form has been nothing short of superb for the Saints this season. It has been like signing a new player for many supporters as he is finally free from injury and being given the chance to shine. Not only has he married his skills with those of his counterparts but the fierce performances have not only drawn comparison to those of his elder brother but reminded me of Mike Teague in his pomp and even harking back to Ben Clarke during his raw and intuitive breakout seasons at the Rec.

Still, who knew that he was so fast? It doesn't surprise me if I'm honest but when he has stepped into the 7 shirt on occasion this year its fit him, metaphorically, like a glove.  It also had me asking my own younger sibling why the club had never thought of playing there previously rather than sticking with Foxy through thin and thinner. The answer was not fit for human ears and certainly won't be repeated here....

I expect to see Mark playing at 7 this weekend and the saints hoping to overpower Skinner at the breakdowns. A good big'un will always beat a good little'un...

Bestie is available for the first time since his ban/ character assassination/ holiday (delete as appropriate) and I like many expect him to feature. From the bench one would imagine but will the rise and rise of Courtney Lawes continue unabated? Yeah, it probably will...

Were I to pick the side however I would go with Daisy and really put the Quins lineout under as much pressure as possible. Fuga and Brooker are not the best throwers in the world. They probably aren't the best throwers in the borough of Richmond for that matter...

Take the bull by the horns I say...

This weekend again represents a measuring stick to see just how far we have come this season. A win at the Stoop would certainly make people sit up and take notice...

Well until Will Greenwood writes that the Quins were awful and the ref had a stinker and the Saints were lucky and whatever blah blah blah he's got lined up for Sunday morning....

Great read as always Rob. Althouh would starting Ansbro (when the pitch is apparently going to be heaving going) on his 1st team injury return be the wisest move?

Chris I saw Joe play for the wanderers dwon here in Bath, his fitness levels and the intesity of his hits left me in doubt. Clarkie is a better option if youre looking for Garryowens, highballs and to pressure the full back and wings.

But Joe's defence has given him the upper hand here I feel.

Its so close between the two, with Chris Mayor also impressing recently that it seems one bad performance and the shirt is lost.
great competition between the three guys, not something we have had for quite some time as you know...

As for Courtney, i expect him to play, I'm just saying I wouldnt.
I've gone with two back row forwards on the bench, its very much wishful thinking on my part...

I'm often wrong when it comes to team selection Towsaint...

What a load of old tosh. My understanding of the game at Northants was that the Saints played their socks off and Quins under performed. More credit to Saints and points a young and gifted Quins side to the realisation that they still have a way to go.

Whilst not wishing to belittle the Saints on previous results and if I were a betting man I'd put a pony on Quins to win.

BUt and its a big BUT - you look across the Premiership sides and any team on a good day will beat any of the rest. So what does it say for this posting. On a good day either side could win. BUT will it be a good day for Saints?

Final thought. You should see the energy and commitment that Quins showed against the Scarletts last weekend. The Scarletts played an Alamo last ditch defense - that I am not sure that the Saints have - to hold Quins to a respectable score they (Scarletts) didn't deserve.

A betting man might take a bonus point win to Quins BUT that's probably not what you would want to hear?

It's a shame that you are still banging on about the citing procedure. Bottom line - don't commit the offence and you won't be cited. I think there is a danger that Saints fans are getting a reputation for having large chips on their shoulders which, in my opinion, is a very great shame.

Teddington Taff

What a load of old tosh. My understanding of the game at Northants was that the Saints played their socks off and Quins under performed.

Well I travelled up from Cornwall for this game and I can assure you that after an even first half, Saints came out and blew Quins away, nothing to do with underperforming. The only problem Saints seem to be having is one of converting superiority into points.

The Scarletts played an Alamo last ditch defense - that I am not sure that the Saints have

You didn't watch the Saints v Tiggers then?

Other than that I quite agree with you. On the day it could be anyone's and Quins must start favourites. Good team Quins and I doubt you will find anyone to disagree with that.

I am delighted at the way Saints are playing and it should make for a great game - lets hope it stays bright and dry and may the best Kiwi win - whoops, we only have one

Being of mixed welsh and irish ancestry i have a chip on both shoulders hence my unusually balanced view point which leads me to anticipate a Saints victory over the multicoloured suburbanites

As it's not televised will Myler have a stormer. At our last meeting I was very, very impressed (kept praying we didn't give away a penalty from just inside your half) but he hasn't done the same when the TV cameras are on him.

The problem is, I think, we're very similar teams in style so will be a good game.

Safe journey down.

Arrogant, ignorant and stupid. Is there no end to your "talents"? What an embarrasment you are to your club. If you are coming to the game tomorrow there will presumably be some village in Northamptonshire missing their idiot. How happy they will be.

Firstly hello everyone, I normally hang out on the offy (for my sins!) and tend to lurk on here but having read the post above I felt compelled to have a word!

Bez the Quin - I'm not sure if you're new to the rugby world or maybe you've just had your head somewhere else for a while, but allow me to enlighten you:
Northampton Saints have actually WON the Heineken Cup in 2000 when we beat Munster. Thats once more than both Harlequins AND the mighty Stade Francais who you seem to hold in such high esteem.
Quins weren't in the HC the season Saints were relegated. We got past the quarter finals beating Biarritz at home to get there (not a bad team either i'm sure you'll agree).
We went on to lose our semi final to Wasps at the Ricoh who that year won the thing.Sadly you can't qualify for the HC in div 1 as i'm sure you are aware.
So perhaps next time before you start looking down your nose at a club that has just returned to the top flight maybe you should remember what has happened previously.
By my reckoning we are one a piece this season. We beat you well at ours, and you beat us well at yours. Hopefully if we stay up which I hope is the case then we will no doubt recruit again and become stronger, more consistent, and hopefully win away now and then! HC next season would be a bonus but we will see about that.
As for the TV love you can have it all. If you haven't worked out that Barnes and his boys are just puppets trying to create hype to sell more sky sports packages then you're missing something.
I for one am not one to get jealous of other clubs and I think most others will feel the same. We all love our club as your fans love theirs. Good luck for the rest of the season.

I'm merely pointing out that we've been there and done it. Your post seemed to me to be gloating over the fact the we aren't in the HC and you are.
I don't really take notice of press, commentry, and pundits as they are all paid to sell papers, tv programmes or whatever medium they happen to work for.
I know if and when my team is playing well I don't need Stuart Barnes to tell me that.
I don't know the guy who wrote this preview and i'm guessing you don't either? I would guess it's meant to stir up some reaction and has succeeded. Some of your fans took it as a personal insult and i'm sure a few of ours would have had it come from your direction. No real benefit in getting all bent out of shape over it though?
