Round COYSDC Quiz
By Old "Irene Thomas" Pete
June 5 2009
Round 3 of the summer brainteaser. 2 sets of questions, both with a rugby connection (maybe tenuous). Points will be awarded for whatever Pete feels like, he's not a Ref you know....ohh! hang on...got that one wrong!

(Product of a Warped Mind)

Once guardian to a medieval velum, showing the centre of the world, This river crossing, used by the army is home to the first part of the festivities.

With Saints to the North South and West, and the Coach bringing up the rear, this river-less, royal island , stands in the home of the second element

The concluding part, a temporary home to a headless King, sports a hexagonal junction where one might expect to find an entrepreneur and his combinations.

Diving straight into Q2, could we be looking at a Mappa Mundi?

The most famous for most Brits is the one held in Hereford Cathedral. It fits the bill of a medieval vellum; Jerusalem is reckoned, at this time, to be the centre of the world. The Here part of Hereford means army (Anglo Saxon) and a ford is a river crossing

Are we talking about Hereford?

Or Leicester? Wasn't Richard III's headless body left on a bridge there?

Q2 is nothing to do with the Three Choirs is it?
Hereford, Worcester, Gloucester?

You'll need to solve all the clues - Richard is correct.

Moving to the third part, I am only right if the setter has made a mistake.

My answer is Worcester.

The headless king would be Charles I but the temporary home of an oak tree (and hence the Royal Oak) was for the subsequent Charles II following the battle of Worcester.

Worcester is the name of the company founded by Cecil Duckworth - it specialises in combination boilers. The hexagonal junction is, I suspect, a reference to Sixways the home of Worcester Warriors (Chairman: C Duckworth)

But if only you were right earlier surely that discounts Worcester Richard? winking smiley

A 'holm' is an islet or island, Royal Island = Kingsholm!

You are so close Richard

No points until someone gets the Saints link!!

Yep I am talking to myself.

Can I suggest if you run this again you set ground rules beforehand as to how to answer, its not nice just being totally ignored.

You're not being ignored Chris - my answer below your first shot at 3 choirs was aimed at you, but possibly unclear.

Chris G Got it right. 4 Points jumped the answers to qustion 2

Richard gets 4 points also for 1 and 3 but getting the Oak tree and Worcester mixed up cost him the rest

Bleach gets the remains (see what I did there?) for getting the word "Nachlass" on the board for the first time, and providing a Kant connection, who together with Wittgenstein, provides a nice lead into a future question which will revolve around "The Philosophers song"

medieval velum – Mappa Mundi Shows Jerusalem as the centre of the world

Army = Saxon Here, river crossing = ford

Hereford

Saints street names to north west and south of Kingsholm - St Mark’s St Catherine’s St Oswald. Dean’s Walk to the rear of the ground.

Holm = Island, Royal = Kings. No river today at King’s Holm

Gloucester

Charles I set up base here = headless King

Hexagonal Junction SixWays

Entrepreneur – Cecil Duckworth – Worcester combination Boilers

Worcester

I think that you are becoming obsessed with Dean blooming Richards. It's a dangerous and slippery slope
