Question: Who was your MoTM as Saints Slew Sale?
It was a case of "Hats on wheels" (or hubcaps on wheels for a more correct translation) for the Saints this week as they came out of the blocks strongly against the highly rated Sale team. Saints could not turn the early pressure into the points it deserved only getting a couple of penalties from the reliable boot of Barry Everitt before Hodgson hit back with a break up field leading to a drop goal. Would Saints rue the spurned points?
Fortunately for the home support the answer was a resounding no as on the half hour home half pint hero Paul Diggin finished off a slick move for Saints first try which Bazzer duly converted for the extra points. A further couple of penalties meant a healthy half time lead of 19 - 3 and we could all go off for refreshment in a happy mood.
Saints did not let up in the second half and further tries from Ben Foden and Roger Wilson meant that in the final minutes Saints were still searching increasingly desperately for that elusive try bonus point. Finally and almost at the death Reihana found Downey in space and he was through the tired defence to get that all important extra point.
To be honest Saints made heavy work of getting the bonus point against a disappointing Sale team. As someone who lived in Manchester for 10 years it was a surprise to find Sale in this form. I was sure it would not be the same come the next meeting - which would be the final game of the season.
It is hard to believe that Courtney Lawes is as young as he is. He has become a stand out player in the hard man positions of a team as such a tender age! He put in another storming performance linking well and running hard to set up Ben Foden for the second try. Cynics might say the pass was from his right hand and slightly forward! All I can say is that I am sure glad Courtney took up rugby and plays in his home town team. I look forward to seeing many years of Courtney in Green Black and Gold. Courtney came third this week with 12% of the 117 votes.
In second place was Ben Foden in his first appearance against his old club. Now as people in Sale pointed out he is a natural full back and runs some excellent lines. He is also, however, being given the opportunity to play at scrum half. I think it was around this time of the season that he indicated that he was starting to agree that full back might be his best position. Ben received 19% of the votes.
The winner was a new name on the list for this season and indeed his first win in this most coveted of competitions. Jurandre has made the number 5 shirt his own in a very short space of time. He is athletic in the line out, solid in the scrums and dynamic around the pitch. This guy is a real find and works his socks off for the team. Congratulations to Jurandre Kruger on winning with over 21% of the votes.
With another win under their belt the forwards are continuing to dominate the overall divisional stakes . In the individual competition Paul Diggin remains in the lead from Roger Wilson.
