Old Pete's Puzzler 8
By OldPete
July 5 2009
this week its about Films - film stars and all that - which is strange for someone who hasn’t been inside a cinema since they banned smoking - and apparently dialogue on screen - replacing what made the experience pleasurable with the ubiquitous crunch of popcorn and endless on screen explosions
Anyway lets get to it - in each question identify the film and / or star etc.

1.       What is the connection between a  lepidopteran  and a former US  submariner   reknowned for his getaways

2.     In what circumstances was an opera confused with a restaurant  as an alibi  for several murders.

3.     Whose marriage to Mr Allnut proved  to be terminal for Louisa.

4.    Where was a  paucity of tenors  was noted  in particular by  two  amongst several welsh men

5.     Which is the odd one out and why  -,

Meryll Streep , Ronald Reagan , Morgan Freeman, Anthony Hopkins , Frederick March , Jack Nicholson , Peter Sellers.

To elaborate, lepidopteran is the family of moths and butterflies, Papillon is French for Butterfly. He starred in The Getaway. The 'US submariner' is the bit i'm unsure on, he served in US Marines and was commended for saving drowning men but does that make him a 'sub' mariner?

5: Ronald Reagan

Reagan was President of the United States. The others have all played the President on-screen.

3: Rose Sayer married Cap'n Charlie Allnut (Hepburn & Bogart) in the African Queen, the boat that is sunk in the end is the Germans Empress Louisa.

Their marraige in the film (Hepburn and Bogart) brought time enough for the plan to work, they asked to be wed before Johnny Boche shot them as spies.

Welshmen singing tenor could be where any few of them gather in real life. On film, I suspect it was in the little town of Gilfach Goch. Home of Richard Llewllyn's Morgans in "How Green Was My Valley"

blimey that was quick

Steve Mcqueen correct - he did serve in various vessels and developed asbestosis later in life which killed him ( might be wrong about submarines - unreliable informant ? )

he of course esacped in papilion and the greta Eascape = getaways.

Rose Sayer = correct - in the African Queen .

Ronald Reagan is correct - all others only played being US president - unfortunately he actually was US President

4. wrong

I believe that the two officers in ZULU made reference to the lack of Tenors in the remaining force at Rorkes's Drift.
"Men of Harlech", was however sung with gusto by the survivors.

David - think they were talking about the Zulu's singing..."They've got a good bass section, but no top tenors" or something similar.

once again C bloc are spot on - well done Simon. David you were close .

" They have a good a base section but no top tenors " refering to the ZULUS is said by a private soldier to Lt Chard ( he wasnt welsh ) but Stanley Bakerwho played him of course was.

Apparently although the 24th foot the South Wales borderers had many welshmen in its ranks it had as many from the English midlands .

so just one to go ..... I must try harder

Would the Opera be something to do with a Chinese detective?

For number two, if Peter Greenaway didn't make it he should have done.

Pete I think that was beacuse they had only just converted to the 24th Foot SWB from the 2nd Warwickshires so did reatain strong links to the midlands.

Joe Hill is the only film I can remember that links restaurant workers and an opera company, where the hero is framed for murders, while refusing to give an alibi with a singer (and the genre is right up the quizitor's street!)

With about a million restaurants named loosely after stuff by Verdi are we looking in that area?

The Godfather?

Just a guess - off to work so no time to back the answer up...

Probably wide of the mark but...
In the film The Untouchables, (I think) Robert di Nero as Al Capone is seen beating a man to death in a resturant with a baseball bat the scene cuts back now and then to Capone sitting in tears at the Opera watching Pagliacci.

Oh dear Oh dear - Its almost criminal the way in which you are wandering about in Opera land and not getting there.

So a cluelet

The answer to my question - lies in the comic ignorance of a response to a question asked in the film

La Traviata can easily be mistaken for La Trattoria... by some...

Ok you either know it or you dont - Some like it hot

towards the end of the film the mob led by Spats are at a meeting of all the mafia bossses who are meeting at a florida hotel as " Friends of Italian Opera "

after a bit and some stuff

the police arrive and question Spats about what happened in Chigaco on St Valentines day

Spats says he was at Rigoletto - the cops then ask one of his bruisers - and where were you " Dont answer that says Spats

The thug replies " Why Boss we was wiv you at Rigolettos "

i think Ive got the sequence right but the words are as indicated a confusion between a restaurant and an Opera used as an alibi for several murders.

Meanwhile Jack Lemon and Tony Curtis .....

The film also has the famous last line

" Nobodies perfect "

and of course Marylyn in that dress - and on that thought

Good night .
