OldPete's Study
By OldPete
July 28 2009
Well - having polished off his last quotient, OldPete repaired post haste to his study (left) to produce some more cerebral questions impervious to "common thinking"! This one is about artists - but I suspect not the type that inhabit these boards and the Maltshovel come Fridays
Can you get the picture -- all about artists and connected stuff.

(1)    What is a rigger ?

(2)    In the 14/ 15th Century what might a wealthy noble
man insist on being used  when commissioning a
painting  order to display his wealth ?

(3)   Whose landscapes - what ever the season were
       famous for snow. ?

(4)   Why was the backdrop to an address by a US
      Secretary of State changed ?

(5)    What is the connection between  a lady novellist
and naked ladies in Camden Town .

(6)    Whose red period began in 1944 and lasted all his
        life.

(1) A Rigger is a thin paint brush most useful for fine lines.

(3) Is this Turner?

(5) Must refer to Sickert's Camden Town nudes but I don't know what the connection with a lady novellist is.

(6) Picasso had a red (or more accurately pink?) period and was also a member of the communist party.

a deveastating opeber from the cultured Mr Spokes

1. A rigger is a brush that is not only fine but has long hairs . First so called or used by maritime artists painting the rigging on ships.

(3) NO.

(5 ) does indeed refer to Sickerts Camden town nudes - and....

( 6 ) close enough - it is Picasso the red period began when he joined the French communist party in 1944 - he was a member until he died in 1973.

Isn't Breugel (god knows how you spell it) the one that did all the snow scenes?

Patricia Cornwell is the lady novelist in 5.

She wrote a book about Jack the Ripper, using lots of original evidence, and the foundation of her story was that Walter Sickert was Jack the Ripper.

Re. 4 - was this the Colin Powell / Guernica incident?

Tracey O - yes and yes

Patricia Corwall is in the view of some obssessed - she has even bought Sickert paintings and cut them open to see if there are secret messages in them !!!

The backdrop to a UN statement was Picassos Geurnica - Colin Powell was about to stand in front of it to give forth on WMDS in Iraq and nore or less launch Gulf 2 - the bombing of Guernica was not considered a suitable backdrop and was covered up. So the Americans did see the irony for once.

blimey i had better get on with the next lot.

Sarge - you thinking in the rigt way - but not gold leaf . Put it like this Gold leaf would have been the bling of that period - the classy geezer would have wanted something else .

no - that would be rather difficult to stick on a picture.

Not as silly as it sounds even if it were wrong. In old portraits the landed gentry would often have, if they owned one, a peacock in the background of their portraits, as they were expensive at the time it was a way of saying 'i'm considerably richer than yow'. Bit like having you photo taken leaning on your Ford Capri nowadays.

point taken Chris - but i rather think putting peacocks in pictures was a bit lateron than the period Im thinking of .

Sarge was on the right track with lets say
" materials " - rather than objects in the picture.

any ideas on the snow question ?

Lots of Ansel Adams' photos have snow in them, but I suspect that it's something more complicated than that!

I'm thinking it's a really expensive pigment, something like saffron (but in a paint)

smurf you are even more than Sarge on the right track - dont know anybody ever tried to use saffron as a base for a pigment.

Emma - nothing to do with photography

Gold was used as a base for some pigments as were some precious stones, on the right track? Lapis?

Chris - youve got it

te colour blue in those times before th develpment of ultramarine - was rather wishy washy relying on some dodgy vegatable dyes.

For a really bright rich blue - if you could afford it - ground lapis lazuli was used.

so that just leaves the snow - which you will get if you dont take it too literally.

the snow referred to in the question was an effect that was characteristic of this artist and was known as " Xs snow "

and just to cut down on the list of 800 - he was known for doing landscapes.

If I hadn't gone for Schicklgruber i'd have opted for John Constable first time round. Do I get the point?

Chris - what took you so long

John Constable was famous for little flecs of lead while paint on leaves of trees as highlights - it was known as Constables snow.

What took me so long?

Going through Google putting every landscape artist I could think of with 'snow' after their name. Luckily Mr Constable was third or fourth on that list.

Yep I cheated but clearly no one else knew it.
