Saints V Worcester Man of the Match Result
By Tim Empson

So a new season starts – full of hope for the Men in Green Black and gold. Piggys patch is pristine – but did the rugby live up to the environs?

Question: Who was your MoTM as Saints sneaked a home win against Worcester?

Worcester at home in the first game of the season!  This felt like déjà-vu.  Once again the sun shone on a pristine Piggys patch and the big question on the minds of most Saints supporters was have we recruited well enough to take the next step to be real contenders for the play offs?  For me there were a couple of factors that really added to my enjoyment of the day.  Firstly Sky chose to cover the match - even though this meant it was shifted to a Sunday and secondly Super sport decided to take the sky feed live.  Thus I could watch the game here in Jo'burg live.

So to the question posed above?  Well on this display the jury is definitely still out.  The team huffed and puffed and ran some neat lines but it was pretty ineffective for most of the game.  Indeed it was almost the case that the generosity so often shown to Worcester at Franklins Gardens would continue, BUT at the death Saints summoned up the nous and desire to snatch victory from the jaws of a potential defeat.

A big worry was the injury to Stephen Myler who appear to have turned his ankle.

So all in all a bit of a curates egg* and for many of us not a performance that filed us with confidence for the battles ahead.

  • For those that are not aware of this phrase it means good in parts.  I have no idea why a Curates Egg is good in parts but there you go.

Who caught the eye?

Only really one winner this week with a couple of honourable mentions!  Thos mentions go to new boy Shane Geraghty who was lively in the centres and Ben Foden at full back.  Both of these players got 8.3% of the votes.

The stand out player with 53.4% of the votes was Bruce Reihana - playing his first competitive game since relinquishing the captains armband to Dylan.  Bruce was always a threat in attack and was solid in defence.  A couple of seasons ago we Saints supporters used to wince when Bruce was playing on the wing.  I think we can safely say that we can wear a smile when Jim selects him out the outside.

Finally thanks to the 133 who voted and my apologies for the delay in getting these started.  I have had some issues with the spreadsheet I use to collate the results and my time has been spent there.

Onwards and upwards!

The graphics are now on a second page. This may help as the season goes on and the size of the grahics grow.

A curate was attending an interview for a post at one of England's premier cathedrals, and was invited to stay with the Bishop. On his first morning as a house guest, he was asked what he would like for breakfast by the Bishops wife. "A boiled egg please" he requested.

When the egg arrived, he removed the top - it was rancid.

The booming voice of his potential future employer came from the other end of the table - "How is your egg young man"

With one eye on his future career he replied " Oh my Lord, it is good in parts"
