Gloucester is one of my favourite trips, I have stood on the Shed and been amazed at the passion they can exude from every pore and the venom that can be vented at the opposition and the officials and yet when the hapless (for he is ever so) whistler blows for no side they are more than happy to chew the cud with opposition supporters. Being a lad from a football background - and a late 70's football background at that, I am always amazed at this. Long may it continue! They are happy to deal with youngster and allow them in front of the shed to watch - what a way to get and catch your support young. Now I have seen Saints win at Castle Grim but it is not a common event. Gloucester backed by that fearsome support always come at you hard. It is their turf and they like to keep it that way.
So the fact that Saints broke their away duck this season at only the second outing and at Kingsholm is a testament to the growing belief in the Saints squad (and possibly a decline in the tractor boys which I am sure will be temporary). The supporters I talked to that went were impressed with the Saints play and that this was no narrow win but a well deserved and hard fought one.
Three games in and Saints have won two and lost one narrowly. Two away games and one at home, are we supporters getting our hopes too high as we look not at the bottom but at the top of the table? Only time will tell.
There was a tie for first place with Soane "Tiny" Tonga'uiha and Shane "TinTin" Geraghty both getting over 28% of the votes.
Soane's steady improvement over the last couple of seasons seems to be continuing. He is a prop who does more than just pushing and shoving (to quote Jason Leonards job description when some young pup passed him the egg), he has soft hands, links well and knows where the line is (and when he is over it). I am sure this will not be the last time this season I am singing his praises. Shane is the new boy on the block having come over to the Saints from the clutches of London Irish.
Reading the comments from them when the switch was announced many were sorry to see him go but thought he had not lived up to early promise. Well out from under the skirts of the Catt he is flourishing. He looks fit and well and boy can he get a back line moving, with a rapiers eye for the break. Welcome Shane to the Gardens - may you be here for many moons.
