16/17 Predictions
04/08/2016 10:41
With a little over 4 weeks until the big kick off, I've put together a few predictions:

Final League table:

1 Wasps, 2 Saracens, 3 Tigers, 4 Bath, 5 Exeter, 6 Saints
7 Quins, 8 Worcester, 9 Glos, 10 Sale, 11 Bristol, 12 Newcastle

Champions - Saracens, again sad smiley

Saints in Europe - Out in QF

Mallinder watch - Saints top try scorer and an England training camp spot by the end of the season

6 Nations - England to win back to back Slams as the Eddie Jones revolution picks up pace

Champions Cup winners - Wasps

Don't feel you have to copy my categories, these are just my uninformed musings! I'm interested to hear the thoughts of others.

4. Tigers
5. Quins
6. Chiefs
7. Sale
8. Bath
9. Gloucester

Champions Cup - Saints to make Semis. Sarries or Racing 92 to win.

Team predictions - Harry Mallinder to secure the 12 shirt, with Burrell moving to regular 13. A more 50/50 battle between Myler and JJ for 10. Alex Waller to get his England call-up.

We did a poll on Twitter of where people expected each AP club to finish. We then formed a table which looked like this:

1)Sarries
2)Wasps
3)Chiefs
4)Tigers
5)Saints
6)Quins
7)Bath
8)Sale
9)Gloucester
10)Worcester
11)Bristol
12)Falcons

Im going for Champions: Saracens

Champions Cup: Wasps

England Grand Slam

Lions to win 2-1

Mallinder 12, Luther 13 and JJ 10 by end of the season with Mallinder kicking.

Saints to sign Israel Folau and Milner-Skudder.

OK, so given others improvements, I think...

1. Saracens
2. Wasps
3. Exeter
4. Tigers
5. Bath
6. Saints

Anything below seems irrelevant. I have a feeling that bath will have a resurgence under a new coaching team

SaintAdam,

Can't really disagree with you too much either, other than I really see us under pressure for the top 6 again this season. Can't see Sale being that far down the table either but then who do you swap them with?!

1. Wasps
2. Saracens
3. Tigers
4. Chiefs
5. Quins
6. Saints
7. Sale
8. Bath
9. Gloucester
10. Warriors
11. Bristol
12. Newcastle

What impact will the Clark and Daisy injuries have on the start of the season?
Definitely time for Collins to get some more game-time and make a statement.

Am I the only one, or does there seem to be a lack of a buzz/excitement surrounding the club and forthcoming season at the moment? Is that just down to only getting one big name signing? Are we waiting for Super Rugby to conclude?
To me other teams only seem to be getting stronger and we seem to be standing still - Can't wait for the team to prove me wrong!

I think you're right about the feeling around the club, Saint 16. When you consider that we've been on a downward trend for 18 months, then that's sort of understandable, and only events on the pitch can improve the mood. A reinforcement or two would help though!

2. Saints
3. Tigers
4. Chiefs
5. Wasps
6. Quins
7. Gloucester
8. Bath
9. Saler
10/11/12 Warriors/Bristol/Newcastle

Cans pick between the bottom 3. It will come down to the head to heads IMO and which one gets a win Vs Saints.

I'm being optimistic. I think we have fixed the biggest hole we had last season with an excellent international no 8. The same issues that caused our bad early season are not there and we have a built in answer for the issues we had in the backs With Harry being such a well rounded player.

I think we might win something this season. It might only be the LV= but a return to wining ways and a top 4 finish will be a reasonable turn around.

Good thread if a somewhat painful topic.

Final League table:

1 Tigs 2 Exeter, 3 Sarries, 4 Wasps, 5 Saints, 6 Sale
7 Quins, 8 Bath, 9 Glaws, 10 Wuss, 11 Bristol, 12 Newcastle

Champions - Tigs sad smiley

European Champions Cup - Sarries.

European Champions Cup - Saints out in group stage.

6 Nations - England Slam.

I have a horrible feeling its going to be Tigs year in the Aviva. They can't continue to have the sort of injury luck they have had in the last two seasons and even with that they ended up in the top4. They've got very few out to Internationals and I think Maugers influence will begin to tell. They also have a really good blend of beef and quality skill from the SH. Toomua will make a huge difference whether or not Manu is fit. Only thing that could put a kink in things is how far they progress in the EERC which could strain their resources.

I have us at 5th in hope rather than expectation. We largely have the players but I've lost the belief in our coaches. I hope they prove me wrong.

I think the saints may be in bother this year.
I cant see us getting through the group stages of the Champions cup or qualifying for that next time around.

I asked the question about Tom Collins and game time at the end of last season, apparently he needs to develop his skill set as they are not up to others.

Sarries or Wasps for Prem and the Champions cup.

Recon for relegation Wus/Falcons/Saints.

6 nations England

Middle 4: Saints Gloucester Sale Quins

Bottom 4: Wuss Bristol Newcastle Bath

No particular order within each group. Not what I'd like to see but what I suspect we will see if we don't start well.

Racing to win Europe.

England to retain 6N but no slam this time round.

Bearing in my the levels of recruitment elsewhere it seems to me that either we cannot afford to further strengthen the squad or we are seen as a less attractive proposition than some other clubs. Bearing in mind the quality of our facilities and some of the Players we have at our disposal - Dylan, Courts, North, Woody, Daisy etc, etc - is there something else that is holding us back ?

Popular opinion seems to see us as a mid-table team at best which seems a little harsh but then again, looking at last season, it may be not so far from the truth. It seems to me that leadership and commitment may be the key factors in Saints forthcoming season with no return to the complacency that we saw far too often last time around. Two good wins against Bath and Bristol would set us on our way nicely.

Nb Is it not about time the European fixtures were announced ?

Champions: Saracens

Saints in Europe: group stage

Saints season: looking very light in second row so can only assume that Mallinder has faith in the academy boys to step up, therefore I expect a chance for Jordan Onojaife to shine. What I've seen of him so far I expect him to take his chance. Also Mallinder junior to cement a 1St team spot.

6 nations: England

Champions cup: Wasps

Craig is injury prone, Lawes will be away with England for most of the year, Paterson has yet to hit the form he had at Sale (injuries played a big part) and we have lost Matfield without finding a replacement yet. That's a huge work load for Day.

Each to there own but I'd be a lot happier with a big brute of a 2nd row enforcer there. I believe it's a specialist position, not convinced with Dickinson or Clark filling in there.

There are a couple of areas that the coaches needed to fix
Hopefull this has been done and is being done in preseason
Jim eluded to it at the end of last season.
Eight was one
For me - the scrum working and not being penalised was another
This may be why another lock is mentioned by some. We have lost some grunt since Samu went.
A 10 that makes the defence think about what is going to happen not be transparent
9 / 10 partnership
12 / 13 partnership
Winger that will threaten
Back three that threaten and work together.
Sorry what was the question ?

If we have not changed our style of play - Saints bottom 6
If we get the best out of our players top 4
Sarries to win the league

Final League table?
1. Sarries
2. Wasps
3. Saints
4. Chiefs
5. Tiggers
6. Quins

Aviva Premiership Champions?
Sarries. Saints to come 3rd if they can cut out those silly losses we saw this season against lower end clubs ... that cost us 4th this year and that is where the subtle margins come in the prem. Get that right and I can see the side playing better together and pushing on the top 2-3 sides more.

How will Saints do in Europe?
I think we might struggle in our group with the away matches but happy to be proven wrong.

Which players are you looking forward to watching and who will shine?
Mallinder coming through more. Foden coming back into his best. Wilson back to his best. North getting some decent ball and space. Dreams ...

6 Nations Winners?
England, not sure if it will be a grand slam though this year.

Champions Cup winners?
It will be either French or English again, so either Sarries or Toulon I am guessing.

Pessimist or realist?

I remember the season we won the Premiership starting a thread that we should be looking to assert our superiority over Tigers when we played them away. A bunch of old-timers were shocked I could suggest we were better than Tigers. But we were that season. To be champions they needed to think like champions.

Sadly we have rested on our laurels since then. First teams caught up and now a number have overtaken us.

That might be pessimism in some people's book but for me that's just being realistic and trying to objectively compare our team to our competition. Blind loyalty saying Saints are the best just because we want it to be so, doesn't make it so.

Equally we have a decent squad and coaches so IMHO we'll be competitive. I'd see us finishing between 4 and 6. The suggestion we'll be part of the relegation battle did surprise me.

Backs are the key as they misfired badly last time around.

Sort out who is in control of the 9 and 10 shirts and stick to it.

Start Harry at 12 and Luther at 13 and stick to it.

Play North and Collins on the wing and stick to it.

Keep Foden fit and use Wilson and Stephenson from the bench.

Give the likes of Grayson, Olver and Packman a real run of games in the LV - if they are good enough, let them show it.

I am mindful of the predictions of last season, when everyone expected far more from the saints than was delivered. We were coming off a table-topping but trophyless season, and with no fresh ideas from the coaching team a number of below par seasons by individuals, and missing one very large and important dog all season.

The fitness of the dog is still in doubt. With the benefit of a full preseason and a September start I would expect us to come out all guns blazing. Everyone will know last season was unacceptable and I fully expect us to put up two wins before we go to saracens.

The next two games will show where we are as teamwork in the pack especialy counts more than any number of flashy backs. If we win either of saracens are wasps I expect us to be in the playoffs and probably with a home SF. Personally Im not fretting about teams that look good on paper.

Personally i expect a slow start from sarries this time around after the massive exploits of the core of the team.

My top 4 are saints, sarries, wasps, and tigers, and in a very competitive season it will be the odd bp separating all 4.

Saints qualify for the Champions cup QF's but lose away. They win their league semi but lose to Saracens if they havnt played them in the semi, but beat anyone else.

Mobbs really like that except Collins at Fullback for me. It seems incredible that we are mostly identifying our backs as an issue when you actually look at the talent we have available. Give youth a chance. Don't play duff combinations that haven't worked for seasons and maybe we'll get a nice surprise.

Shire, I've been saying that for many seasons, without a top 4 standard fly half then top 4 will be very tricky.

Last season's game plan of prioritising the driving maul didn't work because oppos knew about it and obviously spent their build up time practicing their defence to it. A conversion rate of about 4/5 attempts for a single try was a joke.

Packman will overtake Collins in the pecking order.

Mallinder needs to improve his defensive work before he becomes an automatic 1st choice.

Don't underrate the likes of Bath and Sale, Bath had good enough players last season, they now have a few top additions and a far far better head coach. Sale have used their extra cash wisely and even last year were difficult to beat at home, maybe the loss of Cipriani could cost.

For clubs to progress you need to freshen the squad each season, without doing that, the danger is that you run into the Man U syndrome when you have to buy a new team in one season, not so easy at rugby as Toulon found to its cost.

We are lacking players with the X factor to worry oppos and out style is very predictable (well, it has been for the past few seasons).
I hope to be proved wrong, as I would love us to be up there at the end of the season, but it will take the same players who struggled to perform last season to banish those yips and play a style of rugby not seen at the gardens for many a year and with a much greater level of urgency, accuracy and aggression than we saw last season.

agree entirely with Eif. It is possible to win with an average 10 but only if his weaknesses are compensated for by excellence around him.
I don't think we will change much in the backs so I think we may struggle to get to 5 in the table. If we are a bit more radical in the structure of the backs, using Groom, Harry, JJ, Stephenson, Collins, then we could make 4. It all depends on whether the other teams improve by one or two steps, when we stand still.
The first two games are so important, if we lose them it will get difficult. In my book we have been on an 18 month slide, thats tricky to stop without a significant refreshing of the squad.

"Mallinder needs to improve his defensive work before he becomes an automatic 1st choice."

I don't agree Eif. Mallinder does need to improve defensively but he's already at least as good as both Burrell and Pisi. Stephenson is a better defender than all three.

Feeling a lot more positive as there's only a couple of weeks to go and I am told it doesn't take that long to travel from Toulon so Manoa should be here in plenty of time *

If we are expecting Harry to be perfect then his defence could improve, but the player he would replace is not perfect, so play him, move Luther to 13 if his head is right, if it isn't play someone else. This season we can't have Luther playing for us as a rehab exercise because he is not in the England squad, harsh.

Think we will do fine - the year for breakthrough players to really step up - they showed at the back end of last season against Tig's and Saracens, when we were decimated by injuries, the depth of quality young players we have and will lose if they don't play. We have tries "creative" fly half one after the other to replace Mr Myler and none of them have added anything to the team performance. Disappointed that Samu won't be rejoining but confident we will have plenty of good days to look back on this time next year! Come on Saints - can't wait for this afternoon!

Its quite interesting reading this thread and comparing our forecasts with the actual. Following yesterdays result I think my last guess at us finishing 8 might be near the truth. So I suppose I have to accept it and look to a rebuilt squad next season.

Bit late to this thread but I reckon we'll finish 7th but still qualify for Champions Cup by winning a playoff.

17/18 season tho? Who knows.
