Doncaster 8-18 Scorpions - Report

The Keepmoat
By Chris O'Brien
March 14 2010
The Scorpions made it two wins out of two with an 18-8 away win at Doncaster RLFC. A puny crowd of 296 rattled around the Keepmoat Stadium as the fledgling Welsh club maintained their perfect start with an excellent result in South Yorkshire.

In an error strewn contest, the inexperienced Scorpions sealed a ten point victory to make it two wins out of two in Championship One.

Backed by vocal travelling support, the Scorpions moved up to second in the league table as they heaped more misery on a Doncaster side that was dumped out of the Challenge Cup by amateur opposition last weekend.

Andrew Gay broke the deadlock from the visitors as he latched onto a Christiaan Roets and charged over. Aled James added the extras.

The Scorpions had a second try disallowed shortly after Gay's opener before Doncaster hauled themselves back into the game. Lee Gomersall's unconverted try reduced the arrears to two points and the hosts bossed the latter stages of the half as they looked to end a 22-match losing streak.

Anthony Seibold's travelling Welshmen extended their lead shortly after the interval as Steve Parry, following an impressive debut, bundled the ball over the line and James again added the extras.

The game then looked over as David James intercepted a Doncaster attack and showed blistering pace as he ran nearly the length of the field to score. James booted the ball over again and the Scorpions suddenly had a fourteen point lead.

Scott Wilson bagged a consolation try for Doncaster on 71 minutes but that couldn't dampen the celebrations of the travelling Scorpion supporters.

It wasn't a great spectacle and the Scorpions are sure to play better this season - but it's another win in the bag.

Seibold's men must expect a much tougher test at York's Huntington Stadium next weekend - but, so far, things are looking very good indeed for South Wales' newest professional sports club.

Bring on the York City Knights.

Full Time - Doncaster RLFC 8-18 South Wales Scorpions RLFC

At this stage of the season and the club's development any win is a good win!

How does the bonus points system work?

Any team that loses by a margin of 12 or less gains a bonus point.
