Wasps team to play Worcester Warriors at the Ricoh Arena

March 24 2017

Director of Rugby Dai Young has named his side to face Worcester Warriors this Sunday at the Ricoh Arena, kick off 2.30pm.

James Haskell returns from England’s 6 Nations winning campaign to start on the blindside flank, with Matt Mullan also included among the replacements. Joe Launchbury, Elliot Daly, Nathan Hughes and Tommy Taylor are rested after playing a large amount of rugby in recent weeks, for England and Wasps respectively.

Ashley Johnson once again captains the side from hooker, joined in the front row by Simon McIntyre and Marty Moore. Will Rowlands and Kearnan Myall pack down at lock, with Haskell joined by Thomas Young and Alex Rieder in the back row. Guy Thompson makes his return from a thumb injury, which has side-lined him since January, to take a spot amongst the replacements.

In the backline, Kurtley Beale starts at fullback, with Christian Wade and Willie Le Roux on the wings. In the centres, Jimmy Gopperth and Alapati Leiua combine once again, while Danny Cipriani and Dan Robson pair up as half backs, with Robson set to make his 100th Premiership appearance.

Looking ahead to Sunday’s game, where Wasps will return to Aviva Premiership action following a two-week break, Director of Rugby Dai Young said: “Going into the last part of the season we’re in a good place where we know that one or two wins will secure us a semi-final place, but there are still a lot of points to be won and lost and we have to make sure we maintain our performances and keep picking up points.

“This weekend is a massive game for us. We know that Worcester are going to be scrapping for their lives as they battle it out with Bristol, which is never a good time to be playing those sides, and we will have to produce a good performance if we want the win. We’ve seen already how good Worcester can be in their wins against Saracens and Harlequins this year. I’m sure they will pick up some results between now and the end of the season and we have to make sure we’re not one of the teams they do that against on Sunday.”

Tickets are available, starting at just £16 for adults and under 10s go FREE in most categories.  Click here or call 02476 786411

There’s much more than 80 minutes of rugby to enjoy at the Ricoh Arena this Mothering Sunday. Fans are encouraged to make sure mums come too, so they can enjoy the special ‘Mum Zone’ the club has created in the Wasps Nest Fan Village in the Ericsson Hall.

Mums are invited to relax and be pampered with a free glass of prosecco, cupcake, massage and nail treatment.

Interesting to see we are resting our 6N England players (except Haskell), whereas almost every other team are playing theirs (except for Te'o who is out through injury). That means they will yet have to rest their players for one game.

If sides are not playing in Europe next week does that count as a rest week?

Might do.

I'm happy with our 23.

We now have props of equal quality that are interchangeable. Rowlands deserves his starting berth. Myall's mobility is a plus and the back row is fine. The backs look after themselves. Plus a very strong bench.

I think it's a real strong team, excited by the backline!

Why is it only mums get a glass of prosecco, a cupcake and a massage?!

My nails are fine though ... my missus was remarking last week how healthy they looked, the implication being that they haven't seen graft for a fair while ...

Anyway, back OT, you'd think on paper that this team should have enough to get 5 points, but Wuss are sorting themselves out and should be better than when we played at their place, and Wasps have always got a poor performance in their locker ...

I'm optimistic though.

Surely that poor performance was away to Sale?

Is that Rowlands first time in the starting XV?
Good to see Thompson on the bench.

And we'll know the Leicester half of that equation before kick off.
