This season has been plagued with injuries around the Rugby Union World, an unprecedented level according to various sources.
We currently are down our first 3 choices at 9 and 10 never mind all the other swapping around in the team at various points in the season to plug gaps left by an injury.
The resulting lack of consistency has had a very high price indeed. No sooner as a player shows promise and quality in a shirt they have got injured. Other clubs are in a similar position which has made for some unpredictability on the results front. Manu Tuilagi has had no luck at all with injuries of late as he had 7 minutes against Saracens before another season ending knee issue.
The concussion injuries are the ones that worry me the most. The number of players who have had to retire as a result of concussion seems to be ever greater. Having not seen GJ since our opening game makes me fear for his future and Tom Heathcote appears to be having a similar difficulty recovering from head injuries with Jonny Arr joining them in concussion protocol.
Our list of those who have been on the side-lines is just mad.
Annett, Arr, Baldwin, Biggs, Heathcote, Heem, Hougaard, Howard, Humphreys, Lamb, Lewis, Mama, Kirwan, Milasinovich, Mills, Pennell, CSW, Shillcock, Short, Spencer, GJ, Vuna
I have probably missed a couple too. But that is 21 out of a squad of 52 which is 40% out this season at one point or another.
The powers that be in rugby have laid the blame on the World cup season being inordinately long and therefore physically attritional on players.
Not sure that this will work itself out until the end of the season but hopefully we will see all our players recover to play again.
