The table doesn’t lie

Has he got the answers

With only 9 games of the regular season remaining, a quick look at the top of the Championship table gives a clear indication of who will finish in the top 2 positions when all the fixtures have been completed.

Fifth placed Cornish Pirates would have to win at least 5 more games than Carnegie to move above them, and the way things have gone this season, and only 9 games remaining, that will not happen, and it will be a major surprise if Carnegie finish, not only in the top four, but don’t end up as runners up to the all-conquering London Irish.

Yet, even with 12 wins already under their belts, the Carnegie fans clearly feel they are being short changed regarding the performances of their favourites. There is a pattern emerging. and in fairness, you could almost write every match report before the kick off. Yorkshire build a lead, then for whatever reason drop the intensity and allow the opposition back into the game. This happens far too often for comfort, Carnegie hanging on and waiting for the final whistle as teams who should have been well and truly put to the sword, stage a recovery, and threaten the early dominance. There will come a time when we won’t hang on, or as at Richmond claw our way back to win.

The big question is: - why?

Is it a lack of fitness? The timing of the replacements, poor discipline, (been an issue for several seasons), lack of concentration. All of these have been mooted, the fact is, nobody has come up with a solution.

Team selection has also been put under scrutiny by the fans. Is Brush being too loyal to the players he has signed, (and who are possibly the highest earners as well)? It is the fans opinion we are playing our best player, (players), out of position to shoe horn players into the team. This is not a recipe for success, and fringe players are obviously frustrated at the lack of opportunities. Many would argue that our best full back turned his back on the club, and the game because of this.

We are all under the impression we are a better side than the results, but are we? Our league position says we are, our performances say we’re not.

It will be a big surprise if the play off final does not feature London Irish and ourselves. Can Carnegie solve the puzzle and sort out the errors that currently beset the club? Let us hope so.

I am pretty happy with the season so far. Players will be frustrated by not playing but we are keeping a winning team. Last season we chopped and changed and lost games.
Yes we have issues. Penalties and cards galore and falling off in games but the players need to address that and think clearer under pressure.
I do think we lack variety off the bench. Swapping Ryan to 8 did change it up and add another dynamic. Probably need more of that in key positions.
Best season we have had in the championship for along time. Irish are not tanking teams by loads at the moment either and they have substantially more millions to spend.
Hopefully we do make the championship final and play to our potential.

On the games to date the top two are a league within a league, and then with the top two Irish really showed us who's boss when we were thoroughly outplayed at their place.

It has to be said that most other teams that usually cause us problems - Donny, Roth, Jersey etc - are going through something of a transition so, with our squad, we were always going to be up there challenging. However, for whatever reason, you just don't get that feeling of confidence that we are building something sustainable.

Personally I would have "bought" 3 or 4 experienced players of the ilk of Schoey and Davies who I think have been outstanding when they have played this season. I would then have surrounded them with impetuous youth from a number of the local lads we have available and are up to the job. We all know who they are/were.

In past years I have always felt that if we could creep into the play offs we could always surprise someone because of the lottery of the play off system. This year I think I might be looking over my shoulder a bit !!

...and that, imho, is the crux of the issue.

Surely the effort and money we are putting into the Academy, and the satellite Academies, has the aim of sustaining the club? Of course the results of this will take time to come through, so we are in an intermediate phase where, perhaps, we have to "buy in" more talent than ideal.

My view is that we are the best of the rest and Ithe rest are much weaker this season. We play a very limited game plan and not for a full 80. We have a good set of backs but they never seem to get much opportunity. I think Irish are cruising. Can't fathom why we still only have one ten.

This sums it up for me.

Two things and two things only can stop us 1 Irish. 2 Us ,our own inability, our own failings, playing for 40 min won't win you anything! As I said from the off it's a four game season now it's a three game season ! 3 games between us an success! One down three to go !!!! If we don't learn to play for 80 we are doomed ! COYC !!!!

Looking at last season we were bettered by Bristol Donny and LW in B&I cup as well as losing a total of 8 games

Brush had to build a squad with what he knew would better those results, no-one knew who would come down so he had to better his squad with what was in front of him. I argue he has done that and current squad would have run Bristol very close and would wager on us winning league last year. We are way behind what is a strong Irish team but if we did the unthinkable how many doomsayers would say "well were up but it wasnt convincing and we got too many cards"

I dont think we have enough to go up this year but results improving year on year .....could be worse Gary Mercer could still be head coach. Lets be realistic keep taking wins and see what happens. Last year moans that team kept changing what next year? wrong colour Blue in the shirts?

So would you say Championship is stronger than last year or not ? Would you say last year we had 5 or 6 teams in contention for play offs or not. Would you say this year there are only two teams in contention for play offs or not ? I am not drawing comparisons between last year and this ! We have played one side this year thus far and lost the rest is academic!!! Now I am a supporter but I am also a realist !!! Yes you can only play what's in front of you BUT you can and must play for 80 not 40 now the problem is what is problem ? Is it we sent good enough is it we arnt fit enough is it our disapline is not good enough is it our management is not good enough is it our players in spite of all the acoholades arnt good enough to many questions possibly but they need answers because coming second in a two horse race is not good and not clever. COYC !!!!!

Brush cannot build a squad based on wether he thinks the league will be stronger or weaker than the season before, so it doesn't matter,

My view is its a stronger squad than last year might not be enough for LI but since the Re-brand we have improved on results on what is a results based business

Know people are not happy and if they pay their money week in week out they have every right to have a little moan and whinge but do think we could go unbeaten all season and break every record in the book and some would not be happy,

Opus, regarding the blue in the shirts......

I think one of the disappointments is that we expected more because of the quality of the players we signed. I'd agree we are a better side this time round, but in my opinion, the opposition is weaker, and while I'm pleased we are winning regularly, I think we expected, amd are capable of so much more.

COME ON LEEDS.
We've been through it all together.

The next few league games we will play for 80mins with 15 on the pitch winning the game. We will have nothing to moan about then

I think what bugs me most is our capacity to give away so many penalties and thus yellow cards.
For what ever reason I do not know but you would think that the count could be reduced.

The dancing girls are usually the best performers at Headingley. (Sm124)
