Top for me has to be Brian O'Driscoll, enough said.
Closely followed by the magician Felipe Contepomi
David Lemi / Salts, still arguing with myself on that one
Johnny Wilkinson possibly but..... controversially, I'm plumping for the arrogant David Campese for an unbelievably pick up at pace and weaving score v Barbarians @ Cardiff Arms Park.

Pablo Lemoine - you know when you’ve been Pablo’d!
Martin Johnson - so many reasons but favourite is the we’re not moving for anyone line up.
Gareth Thomas - I’ve gone from dreading seeing his name on a team sheet (is that the highest form of praise for an opposition fan?) to a fan.
Brian Moore - particularly post retirement.

Jonah Lomu - to me rugby’s first superstar and someone who changed the face of the game at a time when I was starting to take the game seriously. Through a contact at Cardiff Blues my wife managed to get hold of his match worn shirt from a game in RWC 1999 against Scotland, which has been signed with a lovely message to me - is my most prized possession.

Brian O’Driscoll - single handedly (almost) beat Australia for the Lions in 2001, and just an all round great player and guy.

Jonny W - say no more, and had time for everyone. Remember us playing the Falcons sometime not long after the RWC and at the end of the game there was a massive queue of people on the pitch who wanted his autograph, most of them kids, and he stayed out until every single one had what they wanted.

Johnno - fearless, old school, and what you want from a 2nd row and captain.

Is that the same Martin Johnson who thought Bristol should be allowed to “just fade away”, funny given Leicester’s current status, saved from relegation by Saracens cheating.

Surprised you didn’t mention John Pullen, Alwaysahooker(!). Solid and his front row certainly wasn’t for shifting, great British Lion, winning a series in NZ, and an England stalwart. Shame that left him so little time to play for Bris.

I’d add Rory Underwood, Martin Johnson and Duckham to my list.

You’ve read his autobiography then? It’s nearly 17 years since I’ve read it, but I’m pretty sure he said there was an argument for letting us fade away, after he described our predicament as being sad. He’s on my list as he’s simply the most successful captain that Rugby in this country has ever known. He won everything that was worth winning.

Nah, Martin Johnston really didn't like us. Advocated ring fencing too IIRC. Here's the quote;

"two teams in the Southwest is enough, so lets allow Bristol to fade away and bring up Worcester, so we have a team in the West Midlands"

If Leicester faded away (as almost happened this year) I would feel for their supporters but would enjoy the irony. Especially as the Midlands is the most congested area in the premiership. Bet he's not singing from that sheet now, I'm really not a fan of his.

Well personally it doesn’t bother me, because we didn’t fade away, and now we’re in the best position that we’ve been in my lifetime, so I don’t see any need to be bitter about comments made years ago. Seeing MJ hoist the World Cup aloft was one of the best days of my life. If we’d had a leader like him back in November, then it’s quite possible we’d again be World Champions.

Struggled to keep it below 40!

John Pullen
Micky Skinner
Jason Strange
Johnny Wilkinson

Would also give an honorable mention to Iain Grieve, the most loyal of clubmen, whose career (injuries aside) would probably have been better served somewhere else.

Maybe we can start a Martin Johnson thread separately and this can carry on as a Four Players thread, everybody's own choice free of criticism. I have found this thread enjoyable to read so far and it would be great to get as many posters as possible to list.

It’s an age thing but for various reasons;

Andy Irvine
David Duckham
John Pullen
JPR Williams
