Squad for Prem Sevens?
Hirdyshark 24 July, 2018 17:42
With the sevens tournament coming up on friday, was just wondering what everyone's thoughts are on the squad we might be put out? Hoping it's mainly the young lads that get an opportunity and we don't feel the need to bring in anyone from outside the club setup like we did last year. Some players I'd like to see include:

Odogwu
Reed
L James
Wilkinson
Sturgess
Doherty
Langdon
Dolly

Along with a few of the other younger academy lads such as Tom Curtis, Tom Roebuck, Tom Walsh etc.

Anyone know if it's on TV - it used to be on BT Sport and I think last year moved to one of the ITV channels?

We just beat brizz with Odogwu, Reed and Wilkinson impressing. We play harlequins later but we'll likely make 1/4 finals with that win.

2 mins in against Quins, currently Sale up 7-0 (try by Reed).

Great to see Simon Orange in the role of head cheerleader too, even on the pitch at half time.

As I type, Tom Roebuck just scored too so now 14-0. Quins hammered Bristol in their game too so it bodes well.

final penalty against an absolute travesty of refereeing. should have won.

Not passing in the first half with a 2 man overlap including Paulo was the killer. If we scored that we would have won.

Super effort from both teams.

Missed it. Hopefully our referring shockers will be used up in the 7s this year. Not sure I can stomach another season of them.

Lads did really well, some great effort on attack and defense. Impressed by Odogwu, Reed, Wilkinson and Dugdale in particular while Doherty looked good putting in some big hits before he went off (HIA?). Good to see Briggsy getting the coaching role. On to Falcons now in the cup quarter finals.

From what I saw on twitter, we were stitched up in both games by reffing decisions - Reed getting a yellow for what sounded like a deliberate knock-on which Sam James complained about. His suggestion was that Reed had to go for it - was it a fair card in peopleís opinion?

I thought the card in the Bristol game was for a high tackle preventing a try scoring opportunity. Yellow Card and penalty try. Seemed fair, as did the Bristol lad's yellow. Stitched up but won - bizarre comment
Not seen the Quims game yet.

Ah ok Mike - I didnít see it and from the few tweets I saw, a knock-on seemed the most likely offence.

Stitched up was more a reference to the Quins game and the comments thereof - I did look at it before I pressed submit but tbh I couldnít be fished to change it. I know we beat Bris but it was more in the general context of decisions going against unfairly. But if it was a fair yellow then it doesnít apply.

Hereís hoping the boys go well today.

We looked well coached but not enough quality and no pace in the team which you really need for 7s. Some poor tackling from some of the players as well.

Silly sport 7s!!!

LJK 28 July, 2018 14:35
Very negative clutch. Only beaten in the last play by Quins and took one of the favourites, in Falcons, to extra time! Could have won both bar for late errors probably down to fatigue. Some serious pace from Reed and Odogwu and strength in defence by many of them. Well played lads

Re: Squad for Prem Sevens?
MartWhit 28 July, 2018 14:46
I think theres plenty for these lads to be proud of. I disagree about the lack of pace. Not everyone in the 7 will have the pace to go the length, but in Reed and Odogwu we had 2 of the better ones.

We've narrowly lost to 2 of the better teams here IMO. Could have had more composure to win both, but theres no quality deficit there.

Re: Squad for Prem Sevens?
clutch 28 July, 2018 14:46
Wasnít being negative. That was the reality. We should have won comfortably from the positions we had but we didnít quite have the nowse to do so. Lots of effort though.

Pablo doesnít have pace. Heís got good feet and quick off the mark but he beat about 15 defenders and never threatened the line. Think heís too big as well.

Thought dugdale looked good and the other big lad who made some good yardage.

Thatís what Iím more interested in. No interest in 7s but great to watch some lads with potential.

Problem was that reed went off early in the 1/4 final. After that I think clutch is right that we did lack a bit of pace, but a good effort from a young squad

Re: Squad for Prem Sevens?
clutch 28 July, 2018 18:31
Watching the highlights Odogwu showed good gas against Bristol so probably unfair. However based on the quarter final i donít think he has the top speed of others. Though thatís not necessarily an issue for the 15 game.

Been out this evening and cannot seem to find the results of the semis and final. Can someone put the results up- it would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Wasps beat Newcastle. Sarries beat Quins.

Sarries won final.

No idea who won the plate final

Re: Squad for Prem Sevens?
johneverton 28 July, 2018 23:27
Semis: Wasps 33-24 Falcons; Saracens 29-21 Quins
Final Saracens 33-12 Wasps

Glaws won the plate

Sounds like a one sided final. Thanks for the info.
The Sale lads should be proud but I bet they feel a tad frustrated to lose as they did to Quins and Newcastle. Thatís the addiction to watching sport.
Hereís to next year....

It was. We ran out of steam and players. Only had 8 fit players (?) for final and one of our star players at the breakdown Will W? name escapes me, got taken out early on at a ruck (suspicion of illegally but no card) and had to leave the field.
