Signings and Re-Signings
Chris1850 08 February, 2019 17:36
The club have put up the tweet below earlier today with pictures of the 8 who have recently (re)committed to the Club. There are a further 5 silhouettes in the background along with the usual cryptic teaser. So, it would seem that there are 5 deals done and to be announced shortly? otherwise, why post it? Certainly the one on the left looks like Rob du Preez. The other 4 are not so obvious.

So, if Monty9 says Kitschoff is a done deal, thatís good enough for me. I reckon heís the middle silhouette. I will then go with 2 du Preez, possibly 3. Dimes has spoken about a hooker, so my guess on this is Akker van de Meuwe. Tigers fans seem to think they are in for de Jšger?? I was personally hoping for Steph du Toit but he likes to play at 6 rather than lock, and even he ainít going to displace Jono. Interesting few weeks for all the right reasons !!!

Only because he liked a instagram comment saying something about Tigers.

I would say Akkers is the middle one potentially, looks like he has a beard and his ears don't stick out as much as Kitschoff.

This from sport24 website today:

Cape Town - There could be a big exodus of South African players after this year's Rugby World Cup in Japan.

Afrikaans newspaper Rapport indicated on Sunday that about 55 of the country's top rugby players have yet to sign deals with their Super Rugby franchises.

Fourteen of them are reported to have already signed deals with overseas teams.

The 14 players are Stormers trio Eben Etzebeth (Toulon, France), EW Viljoen (Leicester Tigers, England) and Dillyn Leyds (Wasps, England); Bulls quartet RG Snyman (Honda Heat, Japan), Eli Snyman (Treviso, Italy), Hendre Stassen (Stade Francais, France) and Duane Vermeulen (Kubota Spears, Japan); Sharks quintet Jacques Vermeulen (Exeter Chiefs, England), Akker van der Merwe, Jean-Luc du Preez, Dan du Preez and Robert du Preez (all Sale Sharks, England); and Lions duo Stephan Lewies (Harlequins) and Nic Groom (Edinburgh, Scotland).

Springboks who are yet to sign contract extensions locally and in high demand overseas include the likes of Malcolm Marx, Warren Whiteley and Elton Jantjies (all Lions), Pieter-Steph du Toit, Siya Kolisi, Steven Kitshoff and Frans Malherbe (all Stormers), Lood de Jager and Handre Pollard (both Bulls), Tendai Mtawarira and Curwin Bosch (both Sharks).

Talk that Kitshoff is staying in South Africa now - with SA introducing central contracts that could make sense

Talk that we could get Mark Wilson is Newcastle are relegated as he has a get out clause - possible sign that the du Preez twins move isn't as nailed on as once thought?

Also rumours that we're interested in Priestland - but I don't understand that. I rate Priestland but we've signed RdP and have Wilkinson and Curtis coming through.

Wilson is surely a player any team would take given the chance and with cap space?

It could well make sense for one of Redpath, Doherty or Luke James to commit themselves to becoming a specialist full back (positioning, clearance kicks, one-on-one tackling, joining the line, etc.). As of now, we don't have one.

Not convinced James could be a 15. Not sure heís got the attacking traits. He could learn the positional side for sure. Not seen enough of Doherty. Happy for Wilkinson and Redpath to have some exposure there.

Re: Signings and Re-Signings
thekeg 02 April, 2019 21:32
I donít see why a player as highly rated as Redpath would commit to playing 15 suddenly, he needs to back himself in a position he wants to play.

I think James has done a really solid job at 15 after a shakey first outing, but he probably lacks the pace to be a genuine threat out there long term. Heís been a quiet revelation generally this year, just gets on with his job efficiently and consistently. I always forget how young he is and how recently he converted from the back row. His versatility is a huge asset

Re: Signings and Re-Signings
clutch 03 April, 2019 11:13
The problem and I suppose advantage of Redpath is that heís a completely different option at 12. That means we can tweak the line up to suit opposition, and or bring him off the bench as a point of difference. I donít see us regularly diverting away from more of a crash ball 12 though. Our play making centre plays at 13. Will Redpath challenge James or could 15 be the best position for him?

Re: Signings and Re-Signings
Olyy 06 April, 2019 07:55
Do we have a list of players confirmed out of contract this season?

I'm starting to think this might be it for our recruitment
Maybe a lock picked up after the RWC - though with Akker in, and presumably Neild making the permanent move to back row as a result of that/Langdons rise, I wouldn't be overly surprised for the club to see Beaumont moving to lock permanently as Andreis replacement and youth trusted as 4th choice.

Nott was very highly rated before injury, though as more of a blindside - if he's bulked up a bit the last year then that'd help his 2nd row chances. Postlethwaite has gotten some time as well.

There are rumours of Bryn and Strauss being out of contract, though, which would open the door to a twin or two.

Re: Signings and Re-Signings
StalyShark 06 April, 2019 08:27
Bryn is out of contract AFAIK and is 35 or so, heíll be going I imagine; very good player for us over the years. Strauss has another year I believe but the bench for the past few games isnít boding well for him.

Re: Signings and Re-Signings
clutch 06 April, 2019 10:13

Speaking to one of the players before the game on Friday, he said itís looks almost certain now that Kitshoff wonít be coming. Apparently the home Union has a two-week ďcooling off periodĒ where they can counter offer or persuade otherwise if one of their internationals signs a contract to move abroad - something Iíd never heard of before!
However, our player also said thereís more to come and itís looking very good for next season, especially in the forwards.

Probably worth a thread of its own but it might be a short one. Who is confirmed as leaving and saying goodbye to next week? Is it just Andre or did I dream that one up?

Tarus off to Zebre I think?

Tarus I think. Strauss is often rumoured to be off.

I think only losing 2 or 3 is as much a positive sign as the signings coming in, weíve not had this level of stability in a long time

Yes. Continuity plus a few fresh faces to improve the squad and increase competition is a recipe for success. Hopefully after next season we can be in a position where we are signing 2-3 and losing 2-3 in the Sarries and Chiefs style.

We do need imports from other clubs to add some different thinking. So surely we need to lose more than 2 or 3 in order to make room for our own young players to join the first team squad?

Our squad is 32 man squad. That includes some younger players. In some positions we are 2 injuries away from unknown children without pubes starting games for us! We need to get the balance right. Dimes mentions 36 men squads, which is still significantly less than our rivals. Our rivals still manage to unearth young players each year.
