Rugbypass have started a series of 'all decade XV's' from premiership teams (here's bath as an example). I've had a little think about mine, which is fairly equally weighted between the 'class of 2011' 'class of 2018' and 'class of the entire decade' but would be interested in views!

Alex Goode
Liam Williams
David Strettle
Marcelo Bosch
Brad Barritt
Owen Farrell
Neil de Kock
Mako Vunipola
Schalk Brits
Vincent Koch
George Kruis
Maro Itoje
Jacques Burger
Jackson Wray
Billy Vunipola

Juan Figallo
Jamie George
John Smit (yes, he did prop a couple of times for us and I sneaked him on ahead of Matt Stevens)
Steve Borthwick
Glen Jackson
Chris Ashton
Richard Wigglesworth

Re: All Decade XV
Barty II 02 December, 2019 11:04
I'd mostly agree with you, other than Glen Jackson. Not because I didn't rate him (of course I do!) but he finished up at the end of the 2009/10 season. Charlie Hodgson instead perhaps?

Re: All Decade XV
Primavesi2 02 December, 2019 11:21
Id start Wiggy over NDK and a coin flip between Stretts and Ashy but cant argue much with that 15.

When did Borthwick retire?

Re: All Decade XV
RobB 02 December, 2019 11:44
No Petrus?

Re: All Decade XV
nedrichards 02 December, 2019 12:37
Barty II, yeah Hodgson for Jackson is fair. The fact that I still have nightmare about leicester taking that kickoff probably means it looms ever larger in my mind. Or I'm just getting old. Perhaps someone like Duncan Taylor would balance the side a little better as well.

Borthwick retired at the end of the 2013/14 season I believe.

RobB: Petrus is a great shout!

Re: All Decade XV

This one will take some thinking. 9 alone is a killer, worthy of a lengthy debate!

Re: All Decade XV

I vote NdeK - only because he has the best song

Re: All Decade XV
OhMaroItoje 02 December, 2019 17:07
Ashton should start over Liam Williams

Re: All Decade XV
Darraghgirl 02 December, 2019 17:50
Ashy ahead of Stretts for me

Re: All Decade XV
wolfgangvonb77 02 December, 2019 19:17
Yup Ashy for me as well starting that guy would score a try in a telephone box

Re: All Decade XV
myleftboot 02 December, 2019 19:50
How many Schalk Brits am I allowed for the purpose of this exercise?

Re: All Decade XV
viewfromthe22 03 December, 2019 13:21
Be nice to find a place for Hugh Vyvyan but both 2nd row & #8 options seem pretty well covered

Re: All Decade XV
Gryff 03 December, 2019 13:25
Cobus Visagie finished 2009 so just in and I'd have to find room for him!

Re: All Decade XV
nedrichards 03 December, 2019 13:50
Gryff: If Cobus is in then he's a nailed on starter. One man scrum.

As for the Ashy vs Stretts debate, I don't believe anyone has scored more tries in the South East corner at Allianz Park than Strettle (most of them one handed in mid air as memory has it) so I'm slightly biased since that's right in front of me. However there's probably only one way to decide, dueling YouTube tribute videos!

Strettle

Ashy

I mean, they're both really good aren't they. Still, for me, it's one of them and someone who's just really, really good at rugby. But the pleasure of the exercise is the debate .

In a similar vein here is my "they wore the shirt this decade too" XV. Not that they were bad players necessarily, they just perhaps weren't quite so memorable...

1. Matt Parr
2. Jared Saunders
3. Lorenzo Romano
4. Eoin Sherriff
5. Mark Flanagan
6. Nick de Jager
7. Justin Melck
8. Nick Fenton-Wells
9. Kevin Barrett
10. Gavin Henson
11. Jack Wilson
12. Nils Mordt (c)
13. Thretton Palamo
14. Joe Maddock
15. Catalin Fercu

Outrageous Barty!!! How can you put the legendary Nils Mordt in that team?

You know what, I bet Jono Ross will be in the Sale Sharks All Decade XV...

Mako, Brits, Visagie
Borthwick, Itoje
Burger, Billy, Vyvyan
De Kock, Hodgson
Barritt, Farrell
Ashy, Goode, Williams

Gill
George
Figallo
Joubert
Kruis
Wiggy
Ratouvou

Cobus remained on the staff beyond 2010, so I'm sticking him in. Jesus, we lost Marshall and Mosese in the same year? Simplified the 9 debate somewhat. Kameli covers more than just wing, so I don't have to leave out Kruis or Ernie!

There's a reason he had to have the captaincy!

Most of them were pretty useful when we were stretched.(Sm111) (Obviously not Tango!)

One missing from the list: Thomas Castigne (not sure how to spell it correctly)

Re: All Decade XV

Gerry Thomas Castaignede amazingly played his last game in 2007 so outside the decade

Come on, really?
Did I say they were bad players? Did I say they we were better off without them?

How often are there discussions on this board where people reminisce about some of our less heralded players as a sort of advanced Sarries trivia?

Get a grip.

Other than the 10 that XV would do a good shift in the prem cup Barty. I have very fond memories of such luminaries as Khalid Benazzi, in fact, this thread has made me think that we need an 'All the decade before last XV' as well.

Gavin Johnson, and he can kick an' all!

Does he fit in the penultimate decade category, or is he an antepenultimate?

Amazed nobody has named Petrus du Plessis, would be the starting tighthead for me

Re: All Decade XV

I just think it is remarkable that Brits has a rugby championship medal and rugby world cup winning medal.

It is like a fairy tale ending to his career that is well deserved. Especially after being such a great ambassador for Saracens.

Shame it had to be at the expense of England but Brits is a top bloke.
