Alex Shaw over at Rugbypass put up an interesting article on the top U20's he's watched in the last ten years or so. Including the wider group of honourable mentions I count seven that have played for Sarries (although Damien Willemse had a similar length Sarries career to Gavin Henson, albeit for somewhat different reasons!).

I really like Shaws pieces on RugbyPass and his focus on young players in particular but you'd have to suggest that his not putting Maro at no1 was purely to create a talking piece. However much potential the young Kiwi has he's only three years behind Maro but way behind on achievements. Appreciate he's been injured but even so he seems an odd pick.

Elliot Daly? Marlon Yarde? Both outstanding at U20 a cut above everybody else at the time. Anthony Watson?

BlackheathSarrie: This is purely on U20s performances rather than anything after, and specifically only the bits he saw, so it's fair enough to discount Maro's work afterwards (although the U20 world cup was in his 'he's never lost a game ever' period). I remember a highlight where he got the ball in the midfield with I think only a winger outside and burned the opposition outside center for pace - watching Maro in age grade rugby he seemed somewhat unfair.

That's the problem though. Even if one just focuses on Itoje at U20 level he was outstanding.

Winning man of the tournament in the 6 nations and scoring a try in every game is not normal for a lock.

I assume those dismissing one man's opinion piece based on Maro being 2nd have seen both him and the lad in 1st play at Under 20 level enough to form their own opinion?....
