One of the big disappointments of this season with the absolute-off-a-cliff nature of Ben Tapuai's form. I do think that was partly to do with being the wrong player for the role they were asking him to play, but still.

Really like the look of our centres for next season (particularly if Wilson stays) nice and balanced.

So could be just waiting for a decent time to pass after Saturday before confirming the move

I seem to recall over the weekend Ugo Moyne stating that Cockanasiga was joining us on a year long loan deal.

I believe there was some dispute between the player and London Irish as to the terms in relation to his release clause - I suppose a year long loan deal may see him become a free agent at the end of next season depending on how long he has left on his LI contract.

SteveCh
SteveCh

Several hundred post back I think you'll find the answer is 4 years - new contract signed in the autumn - with the reputed relegation break clause (or is that now disputed relegation break clause?).

Surely it's possible the release clause was to a side in the Champions Cup? Could explain why it was reported as a season long loan when it was looking like we'd miss out. Anyway, I guess we'll all know soon

Based on what I have seen of Cockanasiga this year, including at the weekend, he needs some time to improve his skill set beyond being a big and fast lump. As mentioned above he was shown up a couple of times in defence and going forward only showed his crash bang talents and I thought that he was outplayed by Brew. Is a year long enough for us to really see the best of him?

As much as I've gone on and on about him I'm inclined to agree. Definitely needs to work on his defence. Strangely some very good Exiles friends of mine actually believe he needs to back himself more and use his size and speed. They don't seem to mind about the areas that would seem most need addressing.

Agree. Cocka looks to have bags of potential but he is pretty raw.

I'd imagine our 1st XV wingers will be Brew (11) and Roko (14), but I have a feeling that Vuna might surprise us after a big preseason. He's shown form now that he's fit and looks dangerous, a real finisher. If he's fully recovered, you've got the back Roko to top score next season but I'd have a small wager on Vuna running him close.

If Cocka comes, for however long, he's not going to walk into the team. And I guess it's a good sign that he's willing to come to a club where he'll have to work hard on his game if he wants to get game time.

He could have been for the next 3 years. Offering someone who could be very good considerably more than someone who is very good (in many ways) seems speculative to me. The awkward bit is the club saying that we have to balance the budgets under the cap etc. Then spending it on the same position. Oh well, it’s done now, let’s see how he gets on.

DanWiley
Dan Wiley
09 May, 2018 07:50
I'd be pretty surprised if banners can keep his form up for the next 3 years. 34 year old wingers that are still genuine first team options are few and far between.

On the face of it could be seen as awkward, but it's really a case of we haven't got that much money for a player whose form we're pretty sure will fall significantly over that contract.

Whether Joe is the future I don't know, seems an exciting signing, but that's quite a lot of money. Is there more money for a potential star than a star on the decline? I guess so.

Bath Hammer

Well at least we have time to develop the player. A year’s loan would be pretty useless unless there was an option to make it permanent.

Wonder if our existing wingers will think...hold on - if he's getting that after scoring 4 tries in 16 prem games this season* I think that I'm worth a bit more too? I would be amazed if Brew (players player of the season) was anywhere near that. I suspect that I am imagining issues here but if he doesn't impress fairly quickly it is going to look like a poor decision to spend proven / established winger money on a prospect.

*For reference Alex Lewington scored 8 in 21 starts on the other wing.

“When your star player’s legs go, make sure they go on another manager’s pitch” (or something like that)
Harsh, and I’d love for him to have stayed on, but this is the new reality of our sport, as players across all clubs seem to be finding out.

I doubt he's being signed on 230k a year. It's more likely his contract will rise over time, and be performance-related. The DM rugby pages, whilst normally pretty good with broad themes (i.e. JC is signing) like to inflate the numbers involved.

Great news he's coming on a 3-year deal, mind.

The age profile of our backline is shocking. Our academy currently has not produced enough players of quality for us to promote to the 1st team squad, so if we have to go outside to club to find top young talent that will provide us continuity in the long term then I am all for it.

There will be a changing of the guard over then few years, Banners being the first.

Joe C has top potential; we are paying for the future not the current. Give him time, like we did with Banners when he first arrived, and who knows he may become just as good, maybe even better.

Whilst I too would like to see someone coming through from the Bath academy to fill this role, I trust the club with this signing. I think the signing of young London Irish players on the fringes of England selection has worked well in the past. And - Garvey has been a very good signing too. (Bath academy looks to have produced some good forwards in recent years, rather than backs).

I'd say it's 50:50 as to who will be the more effective winger between Bana.s and Coka in 12 month's time.
In 24 months it really ought to be Coka - barring injuries.
In 36 months there shouldn't even be a question about it, and I'd expect Coka to be fighting for the England shirt.

If we'd been able to comics Bana.s to accept 2 years I'd have been upset if we chose Coka instead (we could have expressed our interest, andnwaited out a couple of years of his contract, aiming to buy him out of his last). But no blame on either Bath or Bana.s for us not offering a 3rd years, or him leaping at what was offered.

True, but at that time Banners was a punt according to him and Meehan, JC is a premium purchase if the mail are actually correct. He is clearly a talent, we will know in 36 months time whether the correct decisions have been made in both cases - certainly hope so in the case of JC and he reaches his potential.
