Edie Jones experienced verbal and physical abuse on his train journey after the Scotland England game.

I can't help thinking that given his 'motivational comments' he might have made a mistake in trusting the general public but a pretty unsavoury incident!

Despicable, whether its Celts on a train, or English bath fans in a stadium.

Well they sound very much like Scots and plenty of footage to identify them.

The reaction of the Welsh at Wembley, when they beat us, showed me there and then why they will never win the WC. Bath did the same crazy stuff after winning the Premiership semi-final, and then had our pants pulled down in the final. Scotland got a good win and now need to move to the next game and beyond. It looks like the fans need to as well.

Sorry indeed that anyone had to put up with that sort of physical and verbal abuse - yobs get everywhere and we can assume that these were football fans. The ancient underlying tribal animosity of the scots towards the English is never far from the surface.

NO doubt he will have to alter his travel in future.

Having seen a clip of harassment and obstruction outside a train station you have to say Eddie showed admirable self control not to answer back or push them away.
can you imagine the press if he had retaliated in any manner whatsoever.

It would have been interesting to see what would have happened to the yobs if the England pack had been waiting behind Eddie for the next cab - no Ewels jokes please BoB.

Or what the press would have made of it if Gregor T had been abused by English fans on a journey home from Twickenham.

I would like to see these people identified and at least investigated. Eddie wasn't physically hurt but that's not the point. Perhaps when they have sobered up an apology would be in order.

If they have their collar felt by the Old Bill with a view to a caution I reckon a public apology would be a good way out for them.
Either that or they could volunteer to take part in full contact training with England, that would be an excellent gesture of goodwill..... (gum shield - check).

I don’t think you can assume that. There are plenty of rugby supporters who behave just as badly & a fair few turn up for Scotland matches. This hatred of the English is very sad & was taken to another level in the Independence referendum.

Eddie is very rattled. A week after saying his side were 40% fitter than 2 years ago, he's saying:

“One thing I know is we can’t win playing pattern football. We don’t have the athletic ability to do it. I have them for 13 weeks a year. I can’t suddenly make them more athletic. All I can do is try to maximise the players we have. We’ve got good players but we don’t have the ability to be athletically better than other teams.”

"We don't have the athletic ability to do it (play like Scotland)"

Any clues as to what 'pattern' football is?

Actually, the more I think of it, inviting them to an 'experience day' at training is sounding better by the minute. The chance of a lifetime.

Get them on the pitch, all smiles photos and handshakes, do a warm up (we all know that's too much for most people as it is). Then some drills, then contact training, rucks and all. Then walk away locking them out of the changing rooms leaving them cold, battered and bruised.

SH stuff , pretty sure its go wide repeatedly to stretch defences then forwards punch holes off 9. To exploit the gaps caused.

Blooming tiring...perhaps that why he is going on about fitness.

So how come Scotland can do it? And if England are 40% fitter than they were two years ago, Lancaster must have been running fitness sessions in the chip shop.

It's not that England don't have the athletic ability, it's that Eddie has chosen to go the route of outright power. It will always win him the majority of matches, but it means they can't be 'bullet-proof'. It's been an English thing since the back-row of Richards/Teague/Skinner.

I didn't get that either. England normally have very athletic type guys available. May is as fast as they come, Watson is an athletic all-rounder, as is JJ. Add in a fit Daly. You couldn't build a better specimen than Underhill. Itoje matches up to the New Zealand 2nd rows in athletic terms. Sinkler, George and Vunipola are all mobile props who handle well. Simmons is up there with the fastest back-rowers I have ever seen.

Then we have: Hartley, Robshaw, Cole and Brown. They are all EJ picks who are not so athletic.

If we look at England when there are going forward it is always when we are winning and using fast ball.

Where it went wrong was at the breakdown where Scotland slowed or won that ball which wrecked that momentum. I reckon he can pick a team to do that but he can't have a full squad. Not sure that the "AP tiredness factor" helps.

I feel that its very similar to what Gatland is trying to achieve, except Gatland can't cant resist picking the wrong players.

Please remember the overall result of the referendum. It will always be the actions of those who have become obese through their own self importance and bully boy tactics which sell newspapers and keep the BBC(Biggest Bigoted Company) in their jobs. Not all Scots are the same, nor are the English, Welsh or Irish. We all have embarrassing nutters in our ranks.

"Where it went wrong was at the breakdown" - i've rewatched the entire game, and i'm pretty sure that it didn't all go wrong at the breakdown. It went wrong because Scotland played better than England in practically every aspect of the game. They were quicker to the breakdown, but they also beat England for aggression and physicality - they even beat us at counter-rucking which would normally require size more than it requires speed. They used turnover ball brilliantly (hey - what absolute geniuses, let's not hoof it away the minute we get turnover), they were bold and skilful. They played smart in the final quarter - turning the speedometer down a bit. They got on the right side of the ref because they knew Nigel likes a game to flow.

I think that's why Eddie is so rattled. If it was purely a speed to the breakdown thing, he could probably fix it by starting with Underhill and putting one of the 3 second-rows on the bench.

Also, wasn't it the case that England's backs were supposed to attack the breakdown like back-row players, negating the need for a specialist 7?

But .... 2 weeks' of relative rest could do them wonders, and England might yet win well in Paris. Personally, I think Eddie has to stick with the majority of his team for this game, and then get braver with his selections immediately thereafter. For me, his unarguable RWC19 starters are only: Mako, Itoje (though not on his 6Ns form), Launchbury, Billy, Faz, Watson. That's way too few at this stage.

Doh! The reason I assumed they were football fans was because the incident happened outside ManU's ground, not Murrayfield. Thus my deduction does make some sense.

Not all sure we should waste anymore finger tapping time on them.

The clip shown on the BBC is outside Manchester railway station, not Old Trafford - so no indication what sport they follow.

Clearly drunk, but I don't think representative of Scots fans generally.

given this, and an unwillingness to use players from outside his core group of 35 or so... It's almost like he considers the 6N to be a stop orpn the route to somewhere else (and probably isn't allowed to say as such)

Cme Satutday England will have played one game in 4 weeks plus training. Genuine question, isn't that enough time to build up glycogen stores?

I suspect it is in part fatigue but I also think that the 'celtic' nations also have some damn fine players - and in terms of top players probably more than us.

Our strength had been our depth of quality and a certain consistency - fatigue will affect both of them.

Depends on the training.
If the training over the last 6 weeks - and the last 3 - is largely R&R - then yes.
If the training over the last 6 weeks - but not the next 3 - is largely targetting a peak performance for the last 2 weekends - then yes.
If the training over the last 6 weeks - and the last 3 - is largely aimed as playing under huge mental and physical pressure, and trying to mimic 9 weeks of weekly international rugby; then no.

Of those, the latter would necessarily require a desperate attempt not to use players from outside of the core squad, to replicate RWC condition.

Its a bloomin miracle England ever won any internationals 'in the old days'!

I am not referring to the 20th century either - they didn't used to disappear for weeks on end to Pennyhill in 10* luxury with a huge support staff of all descriptions. Just chucking money at it doesn't seem to produce a team of players who know what they are doing when it matters. For all the columns ofjournalistic analysis we are no wiser as to why they hardly turned up (I await the usual scornful belittling deluge!).

Wouldn't surprise me if they weren't thoroughly braindead (e.g. overtrained) by the time a match arrives. They also know that they will get their 22k whatever. Just in case they or you have forgotten, many skilled people earn less than that in a year!

So England have lost a game (for once) and it's because they are pampered/paid too much -
when will rugby management at club and national level learn from this obvious mistake?
