I was suprised to see Marler back in, what's he up to? Seemed odd to retire from international rugby in the first place.

So if either Heinz or Youngs get injured we rely on George Ford as sub 9? Weird

I think Heinz is a starter.

2 x 9 and 2 x 10...hmmm

I think the idea is Francis will cover 10 in emergency while a 3rd choice is flown out from England if needed.

Yes, Ford would cover 9 if needed - I am still surprised Spencer did not make it -or even Wigglesworth who could cover 10.

Hope Underhill, McConnochie, Slade & Curry are fit in time for next weekend and M Vunipola, J Nowell recover in time for a match pre tournament.

Pretty happy with that squad - and feels like it's set up to play a much quicker game than Eddie seemed to be setting his stall out for a couple of years ago. Lots of bases covered. Still not sure what the best starting XV is, but as someone said elsewhere, when do you ever get to play your first choice XV anyway. Still, don't understand Eddie's need to d1ck people around, but i do feel quite excited about watching pretty much any permutation from this squad. My final wish is for Ford to supplant Farrell!

Can't believe he's omitted Ben Spencer who is a far better player than Youngs, and has as much big game experience in the last 2 seasons as Youngs.

Otherwise pretty happy and pleased for the Bath boys. I guess Charlie Ewels will be on the 2nd row reserve list.

Congratulations to all those included. The Bath reserve wingers are going to have to be available and on their game for the first few months of the season with AW, RM and JC away.

Not convinced by Francis at 12, so - provided he has a free hand with injuries - I still suspect Eddie might revert to starting the big games with the Ford 10/Farrell 12 selection with Slade/ Joseph at 13 and Manu to come off a high impact bench along with Lawes, Genge, Big Joe, Ludlam, etc. Great to see Ruaridh in too - mustíve been flying in training, and this can only bring him on for us in whatís only his second season!

I think just about everyone would have got 29 names. I called it wrong on a third scrum-half and I had one more front-row and one less back-row. A bit disappointed Spencer isn't going, because I've been telling everyone that he was going to end up as starting 9, but in the end I can respect Eddie's view that experience is everything at 9, and that taking 3 of the least-injured position on the pitch is a waste of a space. I'm unstinting in my admiration for Ruaridh, but I'm amazed Eddie has taken him (and Ludlam) given how conservative he's been in so many ways over the last 3 years.

Five Bath players in the squad and one bound to be in reserve. With such a wealth of talent (and I don't think their selection is accidental: all of those players have definite rugby mojo) you have to wonder why we can't make them synchronise when wearing blue, black and white.

We don't know what Ruaridh McConnochie has been like in training, but there are two aspects of his game that I think might have sold it for him.

His catching, he pulls off some fantastic catches in the tightest of corners and his handling if he is in attack he seems to always make the most of it, either by scoring but he nearly always keeps the ball alive. Add to that his speed and it was quite a simple choice.

I think he is going to have a tough game in Cardiff as we caught Wales cold on Sunday so I doubt there will be as many opportunities for him, but I can see Farrell kicking the ball to his wing as a tactic.

Also chuffed for Joe C as at 21 with 5 caps and 3 tries he gets to run out in a RWC.

Our front 5 struggles [power/pace/handling and set piece execution] limit the opportunities for our 4 backs in the RWC squad to shine as they seem to do when they have better players around them. Well pleased for those chosen and I reckon the Ewels/Lunchbox call must have been tighter this time than any previous meeting...

Like others, I don't understand why Ben Spencer is not there. The Sarries 8, 9, 10 link would be very useful when things get tough. 2 9s and 2 10s strikes me as risky although Francis and Slade can play a 10. Course the simplest option is to put JoeC at 9 and get him to run at the oppo. I'm delighted Jack Nowell is in. England always play much better when he's on the pitch.

As good a squad as we've got, so I hope it's good enough.

... IMHO, of course.

I feel a bit sorry for Charlie Ewels, I thought he had a good game against Wales but there is so much strength in depth in the second row. Maro Itoje, Joe Launchbury and Courtney Lawes are all cracking players but they all seem to play better when they're alongside George Kruis. With great work-rate and set piece, I would have thought Charlie Ewels is the long term replacement for George Kruis.

I'm pleased for Lewis Ludlam, he's done well for Saints and had a good game against Wales. I am surprised with Lewis Ludlam being a good option at 7 that both Sam Underhill and Ben Curry are in the squad. Sam is great but a bit injury prone, I might have gone for another no. 8 (Nathan Hughes) or scrum half (Ben Spencer).

I hope Charlie Ewels is named Bath captain this season.

Will the 3rd option 9 get a start in the next few weeks? It seems such a risk to face a potential situation where your 9 twists an ankle the day before a knock out game and you have to play a non specialist on the bench. Prop, 9 and hooker are the 3 specialist positions and we are a player light in 2 of them. Francis and Ludlam could have been replaced by a 9 and another prop. I would have gone with Wigglesworth and Williams. I would also have looked at Goode ahead of our bolter to cover many bases.

I agree cb, Ford needs international game time experience at 9. If I were Eddie I would bring him in off the bench against Italy at the very least and probably would rather try him there against Wales this weekend, again from the bench with 20 to go

Far better to have that real game time experience in the bag than to have to come in 'cold', for example in a quarter-final. 9 may be the least injured position on the pitch but there are a lot of opportunities for injuries, like you say cb, something as easy and simple as a twisted ankle and it takes just one to need the back up 9 on the bench

According to the Independent Eddie has drafted in a back-rower to the squad for the Wales game to cover for Underhill/Curry injuries - step forward Matt Kvesic. Is this one of those ones, a bit like Shane Williams getting a call up for the Lions because he happened to be on holiday in Australia at the time? Maybe Chris Robshaw and Nathan Hughes didn't bother picking the phone up when they saw Eddie's number come up!

That Eddie Jones, eh. Perversely unpredictable.

So for our first game of the season, we'll have a squad that looks like:

Catt, Dunn, Thomas, Stooke, Ewels (c), Williams, Ellis, Mercer.
Chudley, Burns, Brew, Roberts, Willison, Roko, Homer.
Walker, Obano/Boyce, Judge/Stuart, McNally/Douglas, Reid, Cook, Priestland, Wright/Clark.

Not bad. Although we're certainly missing a heck of a lot of star quality.

Open season but injured player has to be medically signed off, cannot rejoin the squad and the incoming replacement cannot play for 48h after being called up. At least, these were the rules for 2015 (and the 2019 RWC site lists no information at all on the current rules).

It looks like a fantastic XV. I wish Eddie had made George the top dog from the minute he arrived, but it's hard to argue with Farrell's record. With the props, 3 out of the 4 are proper dynamic carriers, and that makes Cole look like a bit old school - especially as he doesn't seem to have recovered the jackaling/turnover ability that made him fairly unique amongst props a few years ago. If I was Eddie I'd be tempted to do a sneaky one: start with Sinckler; if he's taking a pasting in the set-piece, then swap him for Cole on early. Then Coley could go down on 65 minutes with a something-or-other injury, necessitating Sinckler to get back off the bench and do the finishing job he's cut out for.
