“ Bath Rugby is pleased to announce today that the Round 21 fixture against Gloucester Rugby (Tuesday 22 September, kick-off 17:30) will welcome 1,000 supporters into the Rec.

After considerable work across the Club, Bath Rugby’s detailed submission to the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) has been successful following assessment by both DCMS and Premiership Rugby.

The fixture has been selected by DCMS as part of Phase 2 of the pilot programme to return spectators to sporting events.

This follows the successful initial pilot match at the Stoop, the first rugby union fixture in England to welcome spectators, in which Bath triumphed 27-41. A further pilot match took place between Gloucester Rugby and Harlequins at Kingsholm Stadium on Monday (14 September).

Following the selection by DCMS, Bath Rugby are working closely with Bath and North East Somerset Council to secure all necessary approvals.

Bath Rugby Chief Executive Tarquin Mcdonald said: “We’re delighted to be hosting the third pilot event in the Premiership. A great deal of work has been going on behind-the-scenes to ensure our submission was the best possible to welcome spectators back to the Rec for the first time in 205 days.

“We are privileged to be playing a significant role in the path towards returning spectators to grounds across the country and not just bringing the joy and excitement of live sport back into people’s lives, but also working towards the larger crowds that are crucial to the sustainability of clubs following the financial impact of Covid-19.

“The safety of our supporters, players and staff is paramount as we look forward to welcoming our loyal Blue, Black and White back.”

Director of Rugby Stuart Hooper added: “Since rugby’s restart, we have played seven fixtures, six of which have been behind closed doors and in every single game, particularly at the Rec, we have felt the absence of our supporters.

“As a group, we have spent a lot of time creating energy in the awareness there weren’t going to be crowds. There are times when you expect to hear the crowd roar, and it’s not there. It will be great to have supporters back, and it’s hugely exciting to be playing in front of a small crowd at the Rec.

“It is particularly special that our supporters will be back for a local derby against Gloucester Rugby. We couldn’t have wished for a better fixture to have our Blue, Black and White supporters back at the Rec”

Great news to have fans back at the Rec, seems a ballot is the only fair way to allocate tickets. I'll await to see if i get an email on Friday.

You have to think this is a positive step etc...but CG looked empty with 1000 ppl the other day...and the ground holds 16000, iirc and break even is 8000.

So, this approach, whilst welcomed, is not sustainable for most clubs.
Not sure what the comparative figures are at the Rec

London Irish have been trying to do the same thing for years. Maybe someone should ask them how it works.

I wouldn't call 1000 a crowd. in fact I suspect it will merely emphasise how empty the rec is. those that went to the stoop didnt look like they were having much fun after the initial beer froth had subsided. mind you they were soundly beaten....

There may have been only 1000 supporters at CG but they certainly didn't look as though social distancing rules were being followed.
I hope that the club do a better job of allocating seats and that it is well stewarded.

I would have thought that if you had a known limit say to a few thousand that even with distancing you should be able to run the operation on a lower cost that for a full house?

Anyone ever been involved with costing out a large event? I guess you need far less stewards, or maybe they are not a large cost anyway? I guess the electricity costs for all the floodlights might be significant and you can't save there (though I can think of a few games that might have looked better in the dark!).

Pitch prep - same cost. Hospitality - no cost or revenue. So what are the costs that need half a stadium of people to fill it or are the clubs saying that this is a season long calculation to include all staff costs?

Less stewards to control a big crowd, but this is balanced off against needing to enforce more rules.

So may mean loads of stewards.

That said there will be significantly less bar and concessions available. And sounds like drinks brought to your seats.

Get the queue busters in early is my advice.

Good point. So maybe we could employ 4000 more stewards from the fan base to control the 1000 spectators?

A 'crowd' like that takes me back to the days of playing the likes of Old Merchant Taylors and St Marys College with the old wooden score board on a pulley at clubhouse end

Original email had said they would be required except when eating or drinking - seems very cautious given it was completely outside in the East Stand. Maybe it's to stop the shouting!

I didn't come up in the original draw but just had an email offering me the chance to buy tickets which presumably weren't taken up. It's on a first-come, first-served basis and looking at the options, there's limited availability: it looked like single figures % of tickets in each block of the East stand.

I have belatedly got ticket offer, but regrettably am in throes of moving house so cannot spare the time, it's a 140 mile round trip for me. Will be avidly watching on TV though. For once, am really liking forward to the game, even with a little confidence. Cannot say I have felt like that for some time.
