Mama, 28, signed a one-year deal in February 2019 and is out of contract in the summer with Ted Hill, Sam Lewis and Cornell du Preez penning extensions at Sixways during the current campaign.

“It is quite hard to negotiate when you are on the physio bed. It’s an interesting conversation because there is an unknown,” said Mama.

“Naturally the club doesn’t want to sign a player that is going to be constantly injured, they have got to ask similar questions of surgeons and find out what the go is.

“They don’t have too much experience signing players who have had compartment syndrome.

“I think the most important thing is getting back playing and showing that your leg is okay and then you want to get back playing well.

“You want to be proving your worth so when you are having conversations based around your contract you feel like you are in a strong position.

“I would like to think all the contracts and all the outside stuff will look after itself after that.

Sad for Marco but absolutely understandable from the club that they are showing caution and investigating the future reliability of a player who has suffered compartmental syndrome.

Most of the sheathing for his quads has been removed, he now has to play with whatever protection the medics can devise, is that what a club can operate with. Maybe not.

I think he will be watched carefully by the club and any other club which may have fancied a punt on him. He has to show he can play to full capacity over the next few weeks or he may well not get an extension.

There’s absolutely no question he’s good enough for a new contract, but he’s suffered so many injuries that have been long term. I guess the club have to look to around at other players and their injury records to see if they’re an investment for the club going forward. It’s a shame for Marco because he’s a class player and what makes it worse is that he always seems to get injured when he’s coming into some seriously good form.

Such a shame, for Marco and the club. When fit he puts his heart and soul into every game, I hope he can show his fitness and get the extension.

I like what Marco brings to the team - he's an intelligent and skillful player.

But we can't afford to have players who spend as much time unavailable as they are available.

Tough times..

Tough indeed.

However if he is injured and likely to continue to be suspect we cannot take the chance, there is a salary cap.

Bris fan here, I always liked and rated Marco when with us and certainly been impressed when seeing him play for you guys. Hope he can beat his injury issues and get a new contract. Wouldn't mind seeing him back at Bris to be honest.
