Managed to read the digital copy of the Rugby Paper and an interview with Solly. It makes really positive reading about the financial state of the club during the epidemic, recruitment and the re signings of the youngsters.

Solly starts off saying heís absolutely confident that the club will be absolutely fine once things are back up and running and how great Colin and Jason are and how well theyíre keeping on top of things so thatís good to know.

On retention he said that all the youngsters have re signed including the ones that havenít been announced yet such as Nick David,Kai Owen,Nick,Bec Cutting,Joe Morris and James Scott and there will be 14 graduates in total in the first team next season so thatís great news to look forward too amongst other things yet to be announced ;-)

On recruitment he said that thereís 2 or 3 things to be wrapped up and says heís lucky that he started the process early doors and got it done before the lockdown.

Sounds positive from reading that and hearing a few other things on the grapevine. Really looking forward to getting things back up and running and watching these guys play

Cheers AJ, I keep checking the forum in the hope but not expectation of some rugby related news.
I wonder who the other recruited players will be.
If itís 2-3, surely that includes a loosehead? Any thoughts?

Solly doesn't say things he doesn't mean, VERY heartening news.

Itís so good to hear some positive news and thanks AJW.

Sounds encouraging AJ.
Big external signings are usually reserved for season ticket time. Goodness knows when that will be.
I get the impression that our owners care, and are unlikely to let us over-extend ourselves. Whilst that may mean our signings seem less auspicious, it may mean we will have a viable club (although covid may well have devastating consequences within as well as outside rugby). Their clearly stated aim of relying on the academy is in line with a sustainable plan, and currently seems very sensible.
I know not everyone will agree, but I have seen nothing yet to worry me about our new owners, and the removal of Jed was a positive step.

Re: Positive News
TrueWarrior 26 April, 2020 12:56
Did the article allude to whether there would be new external signings or re signings internally?

I felt that Lewis being benched for the last 3 games of this season was to assess whether Mama could play a block of games and come through injury free. Would like to see him re signed but unsure where there will be space if Kvesic is re signing as reported.

Re: Positive News
AJWarriors 26 April, 2020 13:38
Hereís what was said True Warrior

Q. Howís your recruitment and retention being affected?

Solly: Fortunately we were ahead of the game and Iíve been able to look ahead to next season and how we will approach playing again, whenever that may be. We are pretty far down the road with recruitment and retention, with just 2 or 3 things to be wrapped up and Iím happy we went early because itís been a retention cycle for us and the key was to keep all our young players which we have done.

Q. Led by re signing Ted Hill I presume?

Solly: Yes Tedís a headline guy whoís re signed along with another headline guy Ollie Lawrence, but Iím equally pleased that guys like Will Butler, Kai Owen, James Scott, Justin Clegg, Nick David, Bec Cutting, Tom Dodd and all our other young guys have re signed. Iím totally wedded to the idea of bringing home grown players through and I believe we have the makings of a really good team. Iím chuffed to buts we have retained them and we will have 14 of them in our first team squad next season. Key to Worcesterís future is a vibrant, flowing academy.

There could well be space in the cap now that Millsy is moving on,his wage will free up a significant amount of space. Also I think even if Kvesic does come back it doesnít necessarily affect Marco. The good thing for him is he can play all along the back row and not restricted to one specialised position which would work in his favour and ours

Re: Positive News
Abmatt 26 April, 2020 14:46
He also said he fully expects Mills to be a wasps player on the 1 July, irrespective of what happens with the league.

Re: Positive News
shrewsburyman 26 April, 2020 16:59
Is there a particular quote about the financial situation AJW because I think we have all been worried about whether we will still have a club or not! Iím even more concerned about that than the signings!

Re: Positive News
AJWarriors 26 April, 2020 17:59
Thatís all he said mate in terms of questions asked about the club. The article was a lot bigger than that but he was talking about other topics.

I posted what Solly said in the article so thereís nothing missed out. Thatís all he said to be honest, that he said we will be fine. To be honest Iíve heard the same from someone else that the club will be ok too so hopefully that will ease a few concerns.

Itís better to come from Solly himself rather than just hearsay

Agreed, AJ.

Think he can play across all across the back row but so to can Kvesic. I also think Dodd but probably more so Monks and Montgomery will get some game time which does seem to squeeze Mama out. Hill will be consistently gone with England in the very near future ( think he will takes Lawes current roll) so there may be space. Would be sad to see him go as he is one of my favourite Warriors players and gives everything when he plays.

Re: Positive News
AJWarriors 26 April, 2020 21:40
I personally think he will stay. I think he falls into that category of people that hasnít been announced yet. As everyone knows the back row is probably the most injury ravaged position in the game so the more bodies the better. If Marco does stay we will have options such as

Matt Kvesic (if he does sign)
Sam Lewis
Matti Williams
Matt Cox
Ted Hill
Marco Mama
Caleb Montgomery
Tom Dodd
Morgan Monks
GJ Van Velze
Cornell Du Preez

Looking at those options that fills me with confidence going into next season. The quality of depth looks very good and as we said earlier there are a fair few players there that can play in multiple positions

Re: Positive News
TrueWarrior 26 April, 2020 22:28
Depth does looks good. Would be good if we could squeeze to keep him as I anticipate GJ will be off at the end of next season. Would be a shame to lose both in back to back seasons.

Re: Positive News
AJWarriors 26 April, 2020 22:48
I can see GJ leaving too. Big wages and not first choice number 8. I canít see him making the bench next season either. Possibly retiring to concentrate on his boots business maybe?

I think Pens could be another one too in the same situation as GJ. If he did retire I could see him taking up a coaching role at the club. I think he would be brilliant for the academy kids if that were the case

Just speculating of course

Re: Positive News
usa warrior 27 April, 2020 09:02
Don't expect many signings this year. Certainly not what you'd call "big names" either.

Focus is on the youth and that job has been done, I'd suggest.

This pragmatic call might just save our bacon by decreasing the wage bill as well. With this in mind I also can't see us using Mills' 300k salary.

Re: Positive News
AJWarriors 27 April, 2020 09:16
Sensible thing to do in my eyes. I think now is the opportunity to really give the young guys a go and let them try and take their Cavs form into the Premiership. Let them build together as a unit. The positive is that they know each otherís game so they wonít be having to adjust to anyoneís style of play if theyíre new

ROLLO 27 April, 2020 10:02
The rest of the article was also very interesting about a global game. Basically all domestic rugby played between March and August and internationals September to November with Dec - February break.

Agree that I dont think we will see big names. I do think we do need 3 or 4 experienced players to come in (LH, SR, BR and C/Back 3 to solidify the youthful squad we have. Great having a young squad but has to be supplemented with experience.

We also need someone with real grunt.

From the look of his tweets tonight, it would suggest that Marco Mama has re signed, it just hasn't been announced yet.

Re: Positive News

I agree JP. If we are in a position to make one signing and Iím not sure that we are then as you say someone with real grunt would be top of my list.

Re: Positive News
Fiver 01 May, 2020 13:36
I'm hoping there will be some useful rules changes so we see BIG ball carriers go from the game in favour of players with skill. I can but dream. Good news if Marco has re-signed.

I'm also hoping we end up in a position where we can play our youngsters without fear of relegation, however that situation may arise.

Canít see any particular names coming in. I think we used all of the budget re-signing the core and the young talent. Just a bit of a shame we have been so poor since the November signature flurry!
Have we re-signed a 10th-at-best squad?
